Re: Traditions [Re: Icelander]

The 4th of July traditional bbq is all about just having fun. No stress, just a bag of briquets, some brew, and burning flesh on the bbq followed by some pyrotechnics.

Thanksgiving is another good tradition. I like to eat. The travel aspect if you have to fly is a royal pain however.

Christmas was great as a kid. And why not? Just wait with restless anticipation for the 10 minutes of tearing open your gifts. For adults, it's fun to watch their kids faces as they open their gifts. The rest of it sucks. Way too commercial, the phony cheerful "Happy Holidays" from the advertisers and media. People overdoing it on lights, trees, and spending money on gifts that other people could mostly do without.

It's no surprise that suicides peak at the Christmas/New Year's time of year. It is a particularly depressing time for many who don't have loved ones or family to share the time with.

What do all think about traditions? Are the good for bonding or a silly pain in the ass?

Good for bonding and continuity of the family as long as they're not taken to extremes.

Not to mention that some traditions can be a hell of a lot of fun too!

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.
