Everyone seems to be saying the same thing.
It is a tradition to let threads like this die peacefully with a blessing..

In my opinion traditions and rituals are rooted in necessity. You have to think about the reasons which led to the traditions being taken up in the first place. For example, the arabic head-dress is worn primarily because it is bloody sunny in the middle-east/africa, and it helps to have a long headdress which reflects the sunlight keeping you cool. All traditions served a purpose at some point, I guess the purpose of traditions which are not useful now is to have a sense of continuity with ones forefathers and elders, because the world is changing so much in such a short space of time, now more than ever people crave the security and sense of wholeness and continuity that comes with embracing tradition for the sake of tradition, as a way of paying respects to those who had gone before them and as a sign of forgiveness for the way our generation is changing the world so radically.

Indeed... and it is that "necessity" that people have formed for security and continuity that keeps people from abandoning traditions despite their downfalls. (Gay marriage is a shining example) This, to me, is the real danger of tradition. Tradition in and of itself is meaningless and harmless... but when you mix in the stubborn human psyche, you've got something much worse: attachment.

What's the point? Why do something just because it's always been done that way? I understand the appeal of ritual, but why not just start your own rituals? Do what works for you, not what tradition prescribes. It's called progress. Try it out some time.

Ohhh geez. You killed me with "in the name of progress". What is progress anyway? Take for example marriage. Traditionally, it was a virtue for a woman/man to remain a virgin until marriage. This taught self-control and self-respect. Then, in the name of progress the feminists and liberals "liberated" sexuality. Now our society is filled with sluts getting married after fucking 50 men a year, and find marriage dull get a divorce, and leave the kids with all kinds of mental problems. STD's, AIDS, and abortions run rampant. Not only that, but the traditional view of abstaining from sex is viewed as abhorent and a weakness further propagating the problem.

This same story can be applied to a whole spectrum of thought, from individual freedom to economic policies.

Traditions keep what is right and working, safe from outside pressures of progress.

You've made some good points. It seems that much of what is called 'progress' these days in the social sphere is really only change for change's sake and ignores the accumulated wisdom of human history. Certain things which we view as quaint artifacts from a bygone era oftentimes started because experience had shown that different behaviors led to negative outcomes. For example, when I hear of the Jewish taboo against eating pork, trichina immediately comes to mind.

If it leads to STD, AIDS, etc, then it obviously doesn't work for them, and cannot properly be called progress. NEXT!
