habits/tradition
    #17359322 -

i was just thinking about my habits and routines that i have developed over my life. i dont see them as positive or negative really, they're just there, and basically meaningless... even if you start an unhealthy habit like smoking with some kind of moral tone like self loathing or something, when you stop loathing yourself, you're still stuck with the habit...

and like, past traditions and rituals in religons for example, are also just like habits in a slightly bigger organism. they may be accompanied by some sort of moral tone but they are also ultimately just meaningless actions being repeated.

and like depending on how many people you depend on/depend on you (i.e. family), the habits that tie you together and can be reproduced again with their kids will be the ones that survive. and that would be how traditions are formed... and obviously the 'moral tone' then of traditions will be to do with having kids, reproducing, a wife a stable household etc.

idk just a weird thought i guess. it definitely seems nowadays life is less about community and family and stuff which a lot of the traditions and habits depended on (and vice versa). also our moral tone seems to be slipping away (maybe?) and we are left with 'just habits'...?

My GF always wants to sleep on the left side of the bed for some reason. If I start to sleep on that side, she'll ask if we can change. I've asked her why she likes that side and she said she always sleeps on that side, it's her side apparently. She also said habits and repetition make her feel comfortable, so I definitely think it ties into death anxiety. If we repeat something enough, perhaps it creates an illusion of permanence?

I just want to sleep on the left side so I can work the alarm clock. She can never figure out how to turn it off in the morning. Women are strange.

I have some habits that have been life long. I chew on things (pencils mainly). Perhaps due to anxiety.

Women are strange, but you haven't figured out how to move the alarm clock from the left side of the bed to the right side.  Now flip that be around 180 degrees cause you will be giving me some nightstand location BS.  Yes you will have to move the TV to the other side too.  And, now it will be 6 feet away.

Dealing with Change is never easy.

*Insert nightstand location BS*

Flipping my bed around 180 won't do jack cause it's just a mattress.

I also have no tele in my room. :cryariver:

how do you react when someone pushes your button? which button? I mean, we are all habit(s), how do you react to that? can you stop, notice, and not react to the knee jerk activator? isn't that our task? what happens then, who do we become, what can we become, isn't it up to us?

noticing the habit system is important.
it is a big part of us.
understanding how it forms (by association and repetition) and how it can be modulated (awareness, effort, practice) is very valuable.
