Why can't a habit be something that you understand? I have a habit of turning on my left turn signal when I intent to turn left. I understand why I'm doing it. I could even go so far as to say I understand how the mechanism operates, wherein a bimetal spring has a current passed through it and hits a switch to make a light come on, and then due to the current, curls up and turns off the light, and then due to the lack of the current, straightens back out and touches the current again, and so on and so fourth. I will eventually develop a habit of boiling, autoclaving, and alcohol swabbing everything I use to grow mushrooms, and I do that because I understand the risk of contamination and want to minimize it.
Perhaps what we're looking to decide is what are good habits and what are bad habits? And I think the conclusion that we're coming towards is that good habits are ones based on knowledge, such as washing ones hands, using turn signals, and sterilizing stuff, and bad habits are ones based less on knowledge and more on having at one time yielded a positive result, such as lying for attention, attacking people who don't look like you to make sure that people who do look like you get all the food, and not letting people get emotionally close enough to judge you.

Obviously the guy who discovered that you need a sterile medium in order to grow good mushrooms really understood that I guess that until you fuck up once all that remains a theory.
