These are growing from wood chips, quite prolificly Caps about 7cm to 15 cm across Strong mushroomy smell. Veil simular to cubensis. Dry leathery cap skin. Light brown, becoming cracked and darker brown with age. Stem thick and not hollow, light brown with vertical wood grain looking lines. Spore print being taken now, so we?ll have to await that. Growning in my garden in bark chip path, one i was hoping to inoculate with Psilocybe cyanescens, but may not if this proves edible. I was guessing at a stophoria speices, but all my books are leant out at the moment so just hoped some one would reconise it before i get them back.
-hopeing for ediblity

That cap with surface cracking, growth in wood chips, and dark brown spore print should always start you looking at Agrocybes, even if you don't end up there.
Nice ID, guys.
Happy mushrooming!

are you sure its A.praecox, not another Agrocybe? check the description and make sure. http://www.mykoweb.com/CAF/species/Agrocybe_praecox.html

I think I see what you're looking at. At MykoWeb they're described as being 3-6 cm across the cap, but the specimens here are described as being 7-15 cm across.
In Arora they're described as "(2) 3-10 cm or more broad".
The problem with these is that they are actually known to be a "species complex", the nice way of saying that there are actually several very similar species that nobody has bothered to separate into different official species yet.
The specimens above certainly meet the description of the Agrocybe praecox group, with a note that they are large examples. In Mushrooms of Northeastern North America there is a comment that specimens growing on rotting wood or mulch tend to be larger than those growing in grass or on soil.
Happy mushrooming!
