ID please for wood loving mushroom.
    #3274988 - 10/25/04 01:16 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I was walking through a conifer woods this morning and saw loads of these growing from tree stumps. They looked a bit unhealthy to me, but they had a blue-green tinge that I thought was interesting (doesn't really come across in the photos). Sorry I only took one photo at the location. The sample I took was very damp and is only starting to dry out after 9 hours (has been under a glass for the spore print though).

Edit: I'm beginning to think they might be hypholoma fasciculare (sulphur tuft).

a. Habitat:

Location: New Forest, Hampshire, UK (south coast).
Weather: Very stormy recently. 15-3 C
Habitat: In a conifer woods (pine?) with some deciduous trees on outskirts.

b. Characteristics of the gills:

Started off creamy/ white coloured, becoming more greenish as it dries. Gills attached to stem.

c. Measurements of cap and stem:

Stem: 5 cm.
Cap: 5.5 cm

d. Characteristics of the stem:

Dense, quite delicate. Creamy with orange tint.

e. Characteristics of the cap:

Slightly conical, with rounded top. Orange/ brown in centre, fading to cream then green/ blue tinge around edges. Quite dense in centre, thin at edge. Delicate.

f. Spore print colour:

Brown/ slightly purplish.

g. Colour that the mushroom bruises:

No bruising found (only took one fairly mature sample though).

h. Scent of mushroom

Nothing distinctive.

At location:

Spore print:

Stem:

Gills:

Any ideas gratefully received.

Looks like Hypholoma capnoides (edible) to me. Could also be Hypholoma fasciculare (poisonous), but I think it looks more like the former.

Hypholoma looks likely. A greenish tint to the gills is one of the features you can use to identify Sulfur Tufts (Hyphomoa fasciculare).

Happy mushrooming!

I agree with Pinback. The spore print and fruiting in dense clusters is typical with all of my hypholoma finds. I also used a key to double check myself and it fits to hypholoma. Here is a closely related (although not the same) species found a couple days ago.

(species in the pic is hypholoma sublateritum aka brick caps)

They look like Naematoloma Capnoids to me. Also called Smoky-gilled woodlover... Edible but distinguished from the bitter, green-gilled wood lover, Naematoloma Fasciculare(mentioned earlier), by the smokey grey gills, as well as the lack of a bitter taste. It is rarely abundant until near the end of the season, and comes out after its too cold for other mushies..

Don't exactly know what you want to know about them.. Not too rare, fairly good to eat. Not active..

Wow, those are some fat ass stems.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I was initially curious wether the blue-green tint might be a sign of actives, but when they didn't bruise, I gave up on that idea.

Interesting, none the less. I'll just use them as photo fodder in the future.
