unknown orange mushrooms
    #1600564 -

Hey there,
Again this is a fairly newbie-ish post so bare with me please. Today out walking after a deluge of rain I only managed to come across about 20 bright (almost neon) orange mushrooms with caps at least 15cm in diameter, some big, some smaller but about 15cm on average. The were a couple of seperate patches of them but they were all exactly the same colour with no other markings. They were growing near a few tree stumps that had been recently (month or two) cut down but I wasn't able to tell what sort of trees they had been but I would guess eucalyptus considering the surrounding environment.

I live in Canberra, A.C.T., Australia and it's currently getting towards the middle of winter here so it is quite cold (minus figures overnight). I know this is a fairly vague description but there were soem government people doing work there so I couldn't stick around and look at the mushrooms too long. If anyone could give me any possible info on wether these mushrooms are "active" or not or wether they're a waste of my time and I don't need to go back down there at night and grab them all.

Any help and/or ideas are welcome.

I dont think they are by the sounds of them, however there are some sort of orange mushrooms that grow near p. subaeruginosa which are active but i dont think usually that big. Here's a link to another post concerning subs :

it has pics of the shrooms that i would think would grow in act as they do in nsw and especially vic.

beam: nah these were much a more colorful orange. and they were much larger with a more proportional wider cap. Even the few smaller ones had a flatter wider cap.

Were they like these?

I found them and never identified them properly but I'm 99% sure they are some species of gymnopilus.

zeta: Yeah those look almost exactly like them. These ones were overlapping each other in a few patches of them aswell and they have that same wider-than-tall cap. The only differance is I don't think the edges of the cap turned up on as many of them but possibly these ones were just not as old as those ones (these would've been there about a day or two max). Otherwise they look exactly the same.

I'm not completely in the know about mushrooms, is the gymnopilus species active and not poisonous?

For conversations sake only, of course.
