Transparent mushroom?
    #1310360 - 02/15/03 05:34 PM (21 years, 11 months ago)

I found a mushroom once that was completely clear like the corneas of your eyes once. THe clear part was like a rigid viscous membrane that was about 3/8 of an inch thick on an unopened cap that was a little over an inch wide.

If someone could tell me what kind of mushroom that might be I think I'd try to track down a culture and grow some. They were cool as FUCK!

The insides were dark brown.

Any mushroom that fits that description will do.

It doesn't have to be that mushroom really.

Know any good transparent mushrooms?

It took me awhile to think of what you could be describing.

Could it possibly be Calostoma cinnabarina? This odd, stalked puffball initally comes up covered with a transparent, gelatinous coating which is disrupted by the developing spore sac. They are common in the eastern half of the US. Note that in the image the large, developed specimens no longer have their transparent coating, but the small, developing specimens do.

That's not the exact one I saw, but probably pretty similar.

It was small, and presumably nowhere near mature. The gelatinous coating was clearer, not milky at all, rather gemlike really, and surprisingly firm.

I don't remember seeing any indication of a stem.

Is there a name for this transparent, gelatinous coating.

The gelatinous coating is called the "outer peridium". A peridium is the case the spores form in in the puffballs. Note that the stem is not visible in the photograph I linked to. I don't know of a name for the material it is made of, other than obvious descriptive names like "slime" or "gelatinous material" or "goo".

It is possible that you saw a close relative of this species. The genus Calostoma is characterized by having a gelatinous outer peridium.

There are also a few mushrooms that develop a layer of slime on the cap which can actually become fairly thick. But all of those I'm aware of resemble snot more than anything else.

>>immature Phallus <<

What'd you call me?

What little mushroom there was inside the gelatinous layer was smooth and round.

Pardon my tangent, but Hey lookit this!

(A different mushroom I found while reasearching this question)

Champion des Champignons is suggesting that you might have seen what is commonly called a stinkhorn egg. Many of the stinkhorns (one genus is Phallus) are seen as egglike masses of material. They are typically covered with a leathery skin (peridium) and filled with a gelatinous slime in the middle of which the stinkhorn itself develops.

All of the species I am aware of have whitish, yellowish, buff-colored, or even purplish skins, but I am unaware of any where the peridium is transparent. If anybody knows of such a species I would be interested in seeing a photo or a description.

stink horn, yeah, I couldn't remember the common name for them:tongue:
apparently they're quite tasty if you catch them before they start smelling like decomposing flesh.
ever munched down on a slimy immature phallus yourself?;)

True, the one I saw was probably very young too.

Now that I think about it, it might not be a good idea to go releasing non-native fungi into the wild.

I should just be on the lookout for local species that are asthetically apealing.

If you collect local species there should be no problems.

The idea of cultivating mushrooms solely on the basis of their aesthetic appeal is interesting. I can't say I've ever heard of anybody doing that before. Good luck, and post some photos if you come up with some interesting ones.

Sporeworks has Panellus stipticus which is biolumnescent.

I remember reading about a biolumnescent species of fungus that is a nasty parasite of trees. I don't remember if it was Panellus stipticus or not.

There is a Jack-o-lantern mushroom. I believe it's an orange mushroom that glows green.

That may be the parasitic species I'm thinking of.

The parasitic species would be Armillaria mellea, Honey Mushrooms. They send bootlace-like runners underground to infect other trees. Actively growing mycelium in wood glows and is referred to sometimes as "foxfire".

It could be the Jack-o-lantern, the gills of that mushroom actualy glow. I seem to remember something about Armillaria mellea, the honey mushroom, having biolumenscent mycelium.

At one time it was suspected that Jack-O-Lantern (Omphalotus) mushrooms contained some types of ergot alkaloids (muscarine was suspected, too), but this is not longer true. The toxicity of the Omphalotus species is due to illudins. These are terpenoid compounds with cytotoxic effects, and there has recently been some research into using them as anticancer drugs.

Sorry, no ergotamine.
