I don't think that person will get a conviction based solely on those scales. The police will arrest people for anything they want to, but in cases like that, it probably won't make it to court. And that person could sue for wrongful arrest.

Edit: Then again, John Ashcroft is Attourney General, so I wouldn't be too surprised if this guy does get convicted.

don't worry silversoul; they'll figure out how to get us for JUST a scale eventually.. and then they'll figure out how to get us for just hearing that we take drugs, and then they'll figure out how to get anybody they wish whenever they wish.. I thought there were some rules laid out long ago that were supposed to stay in place and not really be added to unless necessary; oh yeah it was called the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, but who cares about that stuff anymore, right?

That kinda stuff only impedes national security....
If these measures arent taken, you'll be blown up by a terrorist before you can say "paranoia".

oh yeah...... scales are only used to weigh out explosive (or other "terrorist") material and DRUGS, which can be sold to purchase explosive materials to endanger the lives of the American people

this prop is so easy and rediculous..

Exactly. People keep arguing that we live in a dictatorship whenever some overzealous cops pull some crap like that, completely ignoring the fact that the courts generally vindicate the defendant. Same for bad laws (homeland defense) eventually going up against SCOTUS.

if they had reason to believe that a scale had been used to measure drugs, it could be considered drug paraphernalia. if you got busted and the police broke into your safe and found a scale and a pound of weed, the scale could very well land you with a paraphernalia charge, and it would probably stick.

Exept no longer is it the occasional overzealous cop, it becomes more and more common, until it is commonplace.

Now any drug-offender can be labeled a "Terrorist," and we all know how painful THAT can be, particularly with this Patriot Act II coming down the front-lines..

Wasn't there already something in the patriot act for obtaining warrents to search houses of "terrorists"?...Making them much easier to obtain?

yeah but with the new patriot act apparently the definition of a "terrorist" is more vague and all-encompassing - allowing them to basically grab anybody whenever they want and possibly excecute them

...or hold them "indefinately" without being required to say who they arrested, why, or on what grounds.

"How we burned in the prison camps later thinking: What would things have been like if every police operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive? If during periods of mass arrests people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever was at hand? The organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt."

- Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Nobel Prize winner and author of The Gulag Archipelago, who spent 11 years in Soviet concentration camps.

Pretty much!...although i hope people dont let it get that bad!

Americans will probably be siting in thier homes, but instead of cowering at every knock on the door they hear, they will probably be feeling "safer" at all the terrorists being brought to reign...until its thier turn.
