"And we, inhabitants of the great coral of the Cosmos, believe the atom (which still we cannot see) to be full matter, whereas, it too, like everything else, is but an embroidery of voids in the Void, and we give the name of being, dense and even eternal, to that dance of inconsistencies, that infinite extension that is identified with absolute Nothingness and that spins from its own non-being the illusion of everything."

"We are all intoxicated. We were born into an insane asylum, a world crazy-making. We believe what we see and hear. The real myth is the myth of sanity, of rationality: it's a disease that is eating away at the earth. All the poisons flow from our denial. We deny madness, we forget our crimes, we dismember the corpse, we imprison our children. We need poison to poison the poison, to remember the sacred nature of intoxication, the green body of the young god." ~ Dale Pendell

I'm just glad so many Deadheads are coming out of the wood work here. :gd_icon:

I've been listening to this album on loop for weeks now.

St. Stephen, Dupree's, Doin That Rag, China Cat Sunflower, Cosmic Charlie... Some of my all-time faves.
The others are good too but meant for a more solemn mood.

Dude... this version of Doin' That Rag is fucking so trippy and awesome  Do you know the story of why this mix of the album got passed over for the version that was eventually released? I'm a relatively new fan of the dead, and am enjoying learning all I can from people who have been fans much longer than myself

Thanks again.

Firstly, I guess Warner Bros. found the master tapes to this 1969 version, so you can get it on CD.
Probably in slightly better quality than this scratchy vinyl.

Aoxomoxoa was their first album made using 16-track recording technology.
(State of the art at the time. The first 16 track albums come out in late 1968.)

Jerry Garcia puts it succintly: "it was our first adventure with sixteen-track and we tended to put too much on everything...A lot of the music was just lost in the mix, a lot of what was really there."

So, he (and Phil Lesh) decided to remix it- basically stripping it down and simplifying it.

Check this out for the whole story:

Personally, I think they ruined the album when they remixed everything.
It lost the experimental nature, the ENERGY (so much more yelling and harmonies and just general merriment)...
"What's Become Of The Baby" became a mess too, whereas the version on this album is very interesting.
