If you choose to go on, that's up to you.
Am I the only one who doesn't like Brent Mydland's "tinker bell" piano he used a lot when he played with the dead. On this show you posted on Archive,in Shakedown Street it's a perfect example. Sucks Keith had to die, he was really good, and so was Pigpen. Damn, being a keyboardist in that band was probably unlucky.

imo brent didn't find his niche untill he was a few years in. his electric piano didn't quite fit in the beginning. atleast not for me. as for the hammond.....he rocked that shit!

The dead are usually too soft for me, but i'll be damned if House of the Rising Sun and China Cat Sunflower aren't two of the best songs I've ever heard.

Brent was my favorite keyboardist of theirs as well. I think he smoothed with the group right away. You can really tell on Dead Set and Road Trips Vol.1 Num. 3. That Hammond B3 is magical though. His style and voice were a perfect combo for that era of dead.

i dunno man, but i think i over played my part, had too much too fast and i have really dark eyes. what ever that means. im really just trying to compherhend this stuff cause honestly im flip floppy on this music. my opinion differs upon wether or not im in the mood for it.
When im not its just very cold, lonely and dark when i am its weeeee. I feel it has alot to do with the haters. cause when it comes to the dead people theres alot of haters, so ill hate on their hate at all the really scummy people. its just an ugly mess. is my problem that im trying to compherhend it too.
i think also this kinda stuff only works if you can make your self unaware of your surroundings. i get way too aware and look at things way to deeply. shrug i kinda like being places that even if i were to over analize things its still really pretty and lovely. at a dead show things get really ... if you do

Definitely not the only one and it took me a little while to get into myself. Part of me has to put aside all the awesome audio technology that my 21st century ears are used to and get into the spirit of what he was doing in the 70s. The work he does up in the late 80s before his death is stellar (as I'm sure you know). Take any solid Stranger or Cassidy, for example.
I'm with you on Keith though, any great show from 73 and 74 melts me into goo. After the hiatus though, I don't think he could have cared less. Listen to the supposedly soooo-good 5/8/77 show for example. Keith's asleep at the wheel for most of the night.
Personally, I'm bummed they couldn't have had Bruce Hornsby on more often than they did
