WorkingMan's Dead.... Great album.
Apt. 86 is THE best hendrix bootleg. BUT, good luck finding an album copy. The sound quality alone merits a download...you can hear him turn the pages as he plays. Bad Ass.

I like Aoxomoxoa. Very ethereal and spacy sounding, in a good way.

seriously, fuck studio albums. ok i have every dead studio album, and love them all dearly (blues for allah, then terrapin, then workingmans, then american beauty are my top 4)... but that's not where the dead is at...
don't spend your money on dead music - or, buy some blank cds, head over to archive.org or gdlive.com (might be the wrong link? i'm a bit drunk and can't remember!), download some great shows (my recommendations are anything from '72, '77, or 89-95... of course there are many better than others, but just search etree, read the user-ratings, and go from there!), and burn them for full listening enjoyment!

Krishna is right, the studio albums wont make you a deadhead, though a few of them are nice
unfortunately, it takes months, if not years to build up your mental dead library to the point where you can decide what your favorite songs are.
it took me a good two years of dead listening to be able to go to a show and recognize almost all the songs played.
as for live albums, go with Europe '72 to get a taste of the dead when they just started to play good and tight together
and for some later but still good stuff, check out Without a Net
good luck
p/s you'll be a deadhead when you know which era was their best: 60's 70s 80s 90s ? ? ?
ok ok everyone knows its the 70s
