The Dead can get intense.

They can send you on their own trip.

That's part of the reason I love them.

Absolutely. Depends on the song of course, but I can look up and realize ive been listening to some live recording for forty five minutes when I only intended to listen to one song. I get completely transported by them sometimes. That is, of course, why they are, in the words of The Poet, "a band beyond description"...

Yeah, whenever I'm listening to em, no matter where I ended up moving to it. It's like impossible to not too. I tend to do this with any music I like though, but the Dead make me do it the most.

for those people who "just don't get it, or will never get it"-in the words of jerry garcia: the people who like the dead are like people who like licorice. not everybody likes licorice, but the people who like licorice, reeeally like licorice.(sorry, didn't mean to reply to marshalldylan1-just anybody who doesn't get it)

a good grateful dead jam is a unique stimulus that cannot be replicated or reproduced.  It's a unique mental vehicle that takes me to a place that nothing else can.  It's so perfectly suited to the goofy, upbeat, disorienting gloss acid puts on everything, it's no shock that the band marinated in the stuff during their formative years.

If you don't like the grateful dead, that's no big surprise, one's taste is as individual as one's experiences.  But if you like acid and not the dead, I'm scratching my head over that one.

Your rain falls like crazy fingers
Peals of fragile thunder keeping time

Recall the days that still are to come
Some sing blue

Hang your heart on laughing willow
Stray down to the water
Deep Sea of Love

Beneath the sweet calm face of the sea
Swift undertow

Life may be sweeter for this, I don't know
See how it feels in the end
May Lady Lullaby sing plainly for you
Soft, strong, sweet and true

Cloud hands reaching from a rainbow
Tapping at the window touch your hair

So swift and bright
Strange figures of light
Float in air

Who can stop what must arrive now?
Something new is waiting to be born

Dark as the night
You're still by my side
Shine Inside

Gone are the days we stopped to decide
Where we should go
We just ride

Gone are the broken eyes we saw through in dreams
Gone - both dream and lie

Life may be sweeter for this I don't know
Feels like it might be alright
While Lady Lullaby sings plainly for you
Love still rings true

Midnight on a carousel ride
Reaching for the gold ring down inside

Never could reach
It just slips away but I try

i'm too young to be a deadhead but i've got a question for you deadheads...

my aunt has an old grateful dead record with some papers inside that include some hand-written lyrics and original record contracts signed by Jerry Garcia that date back to before the grateful dead were famous (i forget the year..) .. she found them in my uncles basement when he died.

scale of 1 to 11, how desirable would something like this be to a deadhead?

--------------------
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

to try and put into words what the grateful dead does for me,
i wouldn't even come close to doing them justice.
simply amazingness.  i understand why people wouldn't like them
all i can say is that you are missing out on some fantastic music.
i cannot help but groove and sing whenever i hear dead.

not to fuck with his words tho but i would say its more like durian

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durian

durian is illegal to take on a plane, cause the how many people dont like and if you dont like it its that bad and if you like it you kinda love it. and just like deadheads it has a really strong smell and thats what makes it illegal to have planes it reeks.

Kinda like me after that last festi i reek of dirty hippie it comes out my sweat glands and its like some sort of sign to other deadhead people ever since i attained this smell i have been cooler with them

I have been on this bus since my Mom bought me tickets to a dead show for my 16th birthday. I just turned 40 a few weeks ago.
I have loved them since I first heard them.
This is my favorite show.... http://www.archive.org/details/gd91-09-10.sbd.sacks.511.sbeok.shnf
Although I love the 60's and early 70's too.
Peace.

Am I the only one who doesn't like Brent Mydland's "tinker bell" piano he used a lot when he played with the dead. On this show you posted on Archive,in Shakedown Street it's a perfect example. Sucks Keith had to die, he was really good, and so was Pigpen. Damn, being a keyboardist in that band was probably unlucky.

Brent was my favorite keyboardist of theirs as well.
I think he smoothed with the group right away.
You can really tell on Dead Set and Road Trips Vol.1 Num. 3.
That Hammond B3 is magical though.
His style and voice were a perfect combo for that era of dead.

i dunno man, but i think i over played my part, had too much too fast and i have really dark eyes. what ever that means.  im really just trying to compherhend this stuff cause honestly im flip floppy on this music. my opinion differs upon wether or not im in the mood for it.

When im not its just very cold, lonely and dark when i am its weeeee. I feel it has alot to do with the haters. cause when it comes to the dead people theres alot of haters, so ill hate on their hate at all the really scummy people. its just an ugly mess. is my problem that im trying to compherhend it too.

i think also this kinda stuff only works if you can make your self unaware of your surroundings. i get way too aware and look at things way to deeply. shrug i kinda like being places that even if i were to over analize things its still really pretty and lovely. at a dead show things get really ... if you do

Definitely not the only one and it took me a little while to get into myself.  Part of me has to put aside all the awesome audio technology that my 21st century ears are used to and get into the spirit of what he was doing in the 70s.  The work he does up in the late 80s before his death is stellar (as I'm sure you know).  Take any solid Stranger or Cassidy, for example.

I'm with you on Keith though, any great show from 73 and 74 melts me into goo.  After the hiatus though, I don't think he could have cared less.  Listen to the supposedly soooo-good 5/8/77 show for example.  Keith's asleep at the wheel for most of the night.

Personally, I'm bummed they couldn't have had Bruce Hornsby on more often than they did  :sunny:

my aunt has an old grateful dead record with some papers inside that include some hand-written lyrics and original record contracts signed by Jerry Garcia that date back to before the grateful dead were famous (i forget the year..) .. she found them in my uncles basement when he died.

scale of 1 to 11, how desirable would something like this be to a deadhead?

we need pics or i'm callin bs

i don't have any pics, if you don't want to believe me then consider it hypothetical and answer my question anyways please?

You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.

Yes it would be highly desirable to most deadheads, we have no way to know its real though.
