Havent read the article yet.  This looks to me like getting the right answer for the wrong reason.  (which is a statement against their reason, not their conclusion.)

If people have an experience that doesn't fit in with their current belief system, the belief system is modified to incorporate that experience in the best way it can, usually in the most "catch all" and less destructive way with regards to the current belief system.

I'm starting to think most spiritualism is related to people having new experiences on drugs/meditation and therefore modifying their beliefs to include a bit of "new agey" talk.

Ego death over a period of time would be when the belief system is completely ripped apart due to critical thinking/new experiences. I think western psychologists would recognise this as depression or an existential/identity crisis.
