a friend of mine is soon to prepare a casing, he is doing the 60/40 coco coir tek, he's wondering does perlite have any negative aspects as opposed to vermiculite?
Thanks from my friend

My friend has read several posts in the past that reported very positive results casing with straight perlite.
He thinks that a coir/perlite combination could work quite well, although he has never tried it. He found verm on sale several months ago and bought a shitload.
He would go with 75% coir and 25% perlite, preferably the coarse variety. Be sure to tell us your results.

I have used perlite and will not do it again. While it will work and the pin sets are extremely nice, keeping the concentration of water in the casing layer high becomes a problem. If you do use perlite you will need to mist much more often (1-3x a day) which becomes tiredsome. Also misting this often has resulted in many, many aborts. Perlite releases water into the air it does not store it. Well it does but only long enough to release it. I might try using perlite in a bottom layer for a casing as it would redirect water from the bottom back into the top of the casing. The circulation may be helpful.

hey diggity i used exactly what you are looking to use. about 1/2" of wet perlite on the bottom then 2" substrate and i did a 50%perlite and vermiculite mix on top(bout half inch) and this was on 2nd flush i think and there wernt as many fruits as expected but they were huge. GT's by PF got me couple over 20g's wet, the cap itself weighed 11g wet with no stem attached. well hope that helps
