casing with perlite
    #519442 - 01/13/02 12:59 PM (21 years, 8 months ago)

cased 3 cakes today in a tray 13x9x2. I put a layer of perlite on the bottom, put 3 cakes in the blender(first time using blender for crumbling, I would recomend it, its easier to evenly distribute)put substrate over perlitethen layered with 1/2 or so of vermiculite(fine grade). BUT i forgot to moistin the perlite!!! Will may casing be ok? or will it suck the moisture from the substrate?

Aalso when casing with verm, can a bigger grade of verm have better results than a fine grade as a casing layer?

Take the perlite off! It isn't a suitable casing substrate. Replace it with that larger grade vermiculite you're talking about. In fact, I prefer the larger grade because it allows better air exchange.

the perlite is the bottom layer! Ii couldnt remove it if i wanted to, the substrate has been blended and placed over the perlite. I have read many posts where ppl have had successful results using perlite as a bottom casing layer, mabey you miss read my post? I would never put it as a top casing layer. the thing is i forgot to moisten the bottom perlite layer, its dusty dry, doh!

As long as it is clean of contaminants you should be fine. Perlite is not like vermiculite. It won't really attract water so much. It will store water in thepore space between the particles of perlite, and will hold a little as well, but it is not gonna dry out your casing. Perlite at the bottom acts as a reservoir for over watering, not as a source of moisture. It also allows some oxygen to get to the bottom of your casing.
Casings work with it or without it. The perlite should be pre moistoned and sterilized ideally, but as long as no contaminants are present, you should be ok.
