Honey Water + Rye Flour/Vermiculite Substrate
    #513198 - 01/07/02 09:50 PM (20 years, 10 months ago)

I asked about this earlier, and while some said "contam-city" it has proven not to be contaminated yet, although it has been around a month and perhaps 40% average colonization over 6 1/2 pint jars. I believe that the honey in the water of the substrate mixture has become caramelized, and is causing the mycelium to work through it slowly, but perhaps with increased yields in the end?

Hi Split, just to clarify, are you saying that you are using half-pint jars and that they are 40% colonized after one month?

That's what I'm saying, I colonized 6 other (12 total) but 6 only had traditional Rye Flour + Vermiculite + Water, and those colonized quickly, completely and healthily in less than a month. Just to confirm, 1/2 pint are 250 mL sized right? They were inoculated on Dec. 9th with B+, but I think it is just the consistency of the substrate that is causing the mycelium to take so long, as the mycelium looks extraordinarily healthy otherwise.

what concentration of honey did you use?
because honey water is used in , well , honey water, and my cat used some once (honey water was innoculated with agar wedge) and it worked great...so if you dilute the honey for the Verm/BRF jars enough you should be golden, no pun intended.

I used probably 10 parts water to 1 part honey, which ends up being quite a bit of honey.

I'm hoping that the long colonization means mega-nutrients or something, but who knows. ;)
