You don't wanna use perlite as a casing material.

i do ALL my casings like that: get a plate and put 50% cococoir and 50% vermiculite. boil some water. when it is hot and boiling (leave it a minute like this in the fire) and pour it on top of your mix. the coco is starting to inflate (SUPER VISUAL lol) Wait till cools (so it is warm to the touch but not hot) then take the excess water out. mix it with your clean hands. put it on top of the mycelium, press it down a bit to sit well, cover it with some foil and put it in incubator. good luck

kykeon::; thanks for the tip! wouold boiling water be enough to make it somewhat sterile enough? would leaving it open to the air while it cools down, introduce it to more contams? also :: how much excess water do you take out? do you want the casing to be somewhat damp still? or should one take out as much water as possible, and leaving it as dry as possible without letting it dry?

i am not the best cultivator in the universe, but what i just posted is what i do. no, i dont have any contams at all. perhaps some cobweb after second flush.

this isnt easy to answer, because wetness is a subjective thing; i may call drippin wet what someone else may call just moist.
what i do is: i put my hand on top of the mixture and turn the plate with the other hand 90 degrees. water is running until it almost stops. thats where i stop too. then put the mixture on top of mycelium. this is still moist and warm to the touch. it will make a very good enviroment (as my experience shows) that the mycelium is gonna start showing on top in a few days only.

uh i almost forgot
take an amount of the mixture you make (about a handful or fistful dunno how to say it lol) and put it in some alu foil and close it well. this material will be useful for patching later keep it in the same place where the casing is (incubator) so it has the same ingredients, temp & humidity as a material and then it is combatible when its been put in the casing as a patch.

I mix up 50/50 verm to potting compost add a hand full of crushed oyster shell them micro wave it in a tub with cling film over. i dont add extra water as its damp already, micro wave for 1 min toss to mix microwave 1 min toss to mix untill its had 6 mins microwave and 6 tosses, let it cool with the cling film still on then sieve through a screen onto the mycelium then spray with water to firm i dont push down on mine.
