US war plan has failed

Peter Arnett: U.S. war plan has 'failed'
Monday, March 31, 2003 Posted: 0902 GMT ( 5:02 PM HKT)

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The U.S. war plan has "failed," veteran war correspondent Peter Arnett told Iraqi TV in an interview that aired Sunday.

"The first war plan has failed because of Iraqi resistance. Now they are trying to write another war plan," Arnett said. "Clearly, the American war planners misjudged the determination of the Iraqi forces."

Arnett -- who is reporting for National Geographic Television and NBC News -- also said Iraq has given him and other reporters a "degree of freedom which we appreciate," this despite the fact that Iraq has expelled several journalists, including CNN's Baghdad team, and apparently has imprisoned two journalists from the New York newspaper Newsday.

Arnett is a member of the Board of Directors of the Committee to Protect Journalists, which is trying to locate the missing journalists.

"I'd like to say from the beginning that the 12 years I've been coming here," Arnett said, "I've met unfailing courtesy and cooperation, courtesy from your people and cooperation from the Ministry of Information."

Arnett told the Iraqi TV interviewer, who was dressed in an Iraqi Army uniform, that President Bush is facing a "growing challenge" about the "conduct of the war" within the United States.

"President Bush says he is concerned about the Iraqi people, but if Iraqi people are dying in numbers, then American policy will be challenged very strongly," he said. In the interview, Arnett said reports from Baghdad on civilians being killed are being shown in the United States, and "it helps those who oppose the war when you challenge the policy to develop their arguments."

He pointed out U.S. claims that civilians killed in an explosion at a downtown Baghdad market were the victims of Iraqi missiles, and that Iraq had said the missiles were definitely incoming coalition fire.

NBC News issued a statement supporting Arnett, saying that Arnett gave the interview to Iraqi TV as a "professional courtesy" and that his remarks "were analytical in nature and were not intended to be anything more."

Arnett also said "clearly this is a city that is disciplined, the population is responsive to the government's requirements of discipline," and "Iraqi friends tell me there is a growing sense of nationalism and resistance to what the United States and Britain is doing."

The longtime war correspondent, who reported on the Persian Gulf War for CNN in 1991, said U.S. war planners miscalculated the will of Iraqis and he does "not understand how that happened."

He said his reports "would tell the Americans about the determination of the Iraqi forces, the determination of the government and the willingness to fight for their country."

discipline is a key word...
discipline can make an american soldier fight for whatever the 'nation' needs him for.
discipline makes you think any other way is the wrong way.

saddam has disciplined this city like a mafia godfather. "do what i tell you, or i will kill you and make your family starve."

NBC, MSNBC fire Peter Arnett

March 31 ? NBC, MSNBC and National Geographic on Monday said they had terminated their relationship with Peter Arnett after the journalist told state-run Iraqi TV that the U.S.-led coalition?s initial war plan had failed and that reports from Baghdad about civilian casualties had helped antiwar protesters undermine the Bush administration?s strategy.

?IT WAS wrong for Mr. Arnett to grant an interview to state controlled Iraqi TV ? especially at a time of war ? and it was wrong for him to discuss his personal observations and opinions in that interview,? NBC News President Neal Shapiro said in a statement. ?Therefore, Peter Arnett will no longer be reporting for NBC News and MSNBC.?
National Geographic, for whom Arnett first traveled to Baghdad, said it too had ?terminated the service of Peter Arnett.?
?The Society did not authorize or have any prior knowledge of Arnett?s television interview with Iraqi television,? it said in a statement, ?and had we been consulted, would not have allowed it. His decision to grant an interview and express his personal views on state controlled Iraqi television, especially during a time of war, was a serious error in judgment and wrong.?
Arnett, who won a Pulitzer Prize reporting in Vietnam for The Associated Press, appeared on NBC?s ?Today? show Monday to apologize for his statements. (MSNBC.com is an NBC News-Microsoft joint venture.)

INTERVIEW CONTENT
In the Iraqi TV interview, Arnett said his Iraqi friends had told him that there was a growing sense of nationalism and resistance to what the United States and Britain were doing.
He said the United States was reappraising the battlefield and delaying the war, maybe for a week, ?and rewriting the war plan. The first war plan has failed because of Iraqi resistance. Now they are trying to write another war plan.?

?Clearly, the American war plans misjudged the determination of the Iraqi forces,? Arnett said during the interview, which was broadcast by Iraq?s satellite television station and monitored by The AP in Egypt.
Arnett said it was clear that there was growing opposition to the war within the United States and a growing challenge to President Bush.
?Our reports about civilian casualties here, about the resistance of the Iraqi forces, are going back to the United States,? he said. ?It helps those who oppose the war when you challenge the policy to develop their arguments.?
The interview was broadcast in English and translated by a green military uniform-wearing Iraqi anchor. NBC said Arnett gave the interview when asked shortly after he attended an Iraqi government briefing.
The interview quickly made Arnett a target of the war?s supporters.
Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., said on Fox News Channel that she found the interview ?nauseating? and accused Arnett of ?kowtowing to what clearly is the enemy in this way.?
NBC initially backed Arnett?s interview. ?His impromptu interview with Iraqi TV was done as a professional courtesy and was similar to other interviews he has done with media outlets from around the world,? NBC News spokeswoman Allison Gollust said. ?His remarks were analytical in nature and were not intended to be anything more. His outstanding reporting on the war speaks for itself.?

BACKGROUND SINCE 1991
Arnett garnered much of his prominence from covering the 1991 Gulf War for CNN. But even then the first Bush administration was unhappy with his reporting, suggesting that he had become a conveyor of propaganda.
At one point, he was denounced for his reporting about an allied bombing of a baby milk factory in Baghdad that the military said was a biological weapons plant. The U.S. military responded vigorously to the suggestion it had targeted a civilian facility, but Arnett stood by his reporting that the plant?s sole purpose was to make baby formula.
Arnett was also the on-air reporter of a 1998 CNN report that accused U.S. forces of using sarin gas on a Laotian village in 1970 to kill U.S. defectors. Two CNN employees were sacked, and Arnett was reprimanded over the report, which the station later retracted. Arnett later left the network.
He went to Iraq this year not as an NBC News reporter but as an employee of ?National Geographic Explorer.? When other NBC reporters left Baghdad for safety reasons, the network began airing his reports.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

He has the freedom to say what he wants. The government did not silence him. He was fired. You can be fired for what you say.
Remember businesses such as NBC can fire people. That is their right. Freedom goes two ways.

When the same economic persuasion (ie big oil) is being applied to both the government and NBC (owned by GE), then it is the equivelant to censorship.

NBC did what they did because of who they represent. They represent the same people who are represented by our government. Does this make any sense? I would feel better of the media was a federal institution. It seems to work well for England and Canada. There is virtually no difference anyway.

I said it at the beginning of the war and ill say it now "you can't liberate another, only the individual can liberate themself".

Its a shame the us must wast billions of dollars and many lives in order for this to be seen. Assuming they do win the war, wait till after, the kurds and such wont accept a western government, and if the US enforces thier regime, isn't this the same situation as having saddam in power? the us will have to forcefully hold on to thier power, which is not a democracy.

Well, you see luv, when a top reporter is censored and fired by a mega conglomerate due to his views, you can make the analogy that he has been blacklisted. Do you think he'll find work anywhere else? Maybe for The Onion? He'll definitely re-gain respect that way.

I think it's funny that at first NBC tried defending him. It wouldn't surprise me if they got orders from the "higher-ups" at GE.

A person with no grasp of the english language could make that assumption. The day he is fired is way too soon.

Yes I think he'll find work. Maybe it'll be months, maybe weeks. You don't know, I don't know.

They gave Marv Albert his job back.

To say "blacklist" is the height of foolishness. Why so many of the people who post here are such drama queens is a mystery to me. Many points that could be made here are so quickly overlooked when drama flows so freely.

And a reporters job is to report the news, not make it by being stupid enough to flap his mouth when it's his ears which should be open.

Seems I was wrong.

It took hours.

Daily Mirror newspaper hires fired journalist Peter Arnett
50 minutes ago

LONDON - A British tabloid newspaper said Tuesday it had hired veteran reporter Peter Arnett, who was fired by American TV network NBC after he said the U.S.-led war effort in Iraq (news - web sites) had failed.

"Fired by America for telling the truth," said the Daily Mirror in a front page headline, adding it had hired the "legendary war reporter" to carry on telling the truth.

"I am still in shock and awe at being fired," Arnett wrote for the newspaper, which is vehemently opposed to the war. "I report the truth of what is happening here in Baghdad and will not apologize for it."

NBC fired Arnett, who won a Pulitzer Prize reporting in Vietnam for The Associated Press, on March 31, angered that he had given an unauthorized interview with state-run Iraqi TV saying the American-led war effort initially failed because of Iraq's resistance.

The network said it got thousands of e-mails and phone calls protesting his remarks.

Unfortunately, I'm fairly sure that NBC has every legal right to fire him, they are a private company and can do what they want in that regard. Really though, you would think that he had to have known saying what he did could get him in some serious trouble, yet went ahead and said it anyway.

But perhaps a long slow walk will teach him that reporters LISTEN AND ASK QUESTIONS.
