Adding some bleach to soaking grains??
    #1410150 - 03/26/03 02:35 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I like to soak my grains over night. Alot of times Ill get busy and wonte get around to cooking them. Somtimes I have to wait 30 or so hours and when I come back I think theyre fermenting. They smell sweet and they bubble.
I know that there are other ways to prepare my grains that will eliminate this problem but I like to soak them so heres my question, Would there be anything wrong with adding a little bleach to the water for longer soaks to stop fermenting?
What would be a safe ratio?

Thank you

I think the bleach will interact with the organics in the jar and change it into other stuff.(I'm no chemist so i can't say exactly what happens.)Instead of water Try a 10/1 water/peroxide soluition. When you PC, it will destroy the H2O2 therby letting spores germinate.

Fermented grain is not a show stopper, as long as you PC them,,, you should be fine.

I've done the 48hr soak before with success.... Rinse very well, let drain , load and PC>

A tiny bit of "fermenting" is actualy a good sign. You know endospores have germinated, when that happens. As stated above, rinse, drain (well), load & PC.

No need to fool with adding anything, other than water. Mother nature does perfect, by herself.

It would be malting first off, which is converting the starches into sugars (to use for germination). And then as the sugars become available a wild yeast would come along and convert the sugars into alcohol and co2 (fermentation). I think that the sugars would be beneficial for mycelial culture, but the alcohol not so.

Anyone else agree or disagree?

i've done it several times, esp for larger batches that won't fit in the fridge that i can't get to right away.
the bleach is harmless, just drain and rinse after.
a tablespoon per gallon is plenty.
peroxide would be very quickly rendered inactive by the large amount of organic compounds present, don't waste your time with it.

that's definitely bad, even small amounts of alcohol.
not to mention the yeasts.
better to avoid fermentation.

when i have wait too long, sometimes after the first 24 hours ill load up all the jars after draining the grain and then put them in the freezer... seemed to acctually work more quickly

bleachg to grain is fantastic for reducing contam

I soak the grain o/night with bleach to germinate and kill some of the bacteria , then i boil the grain , drain and pack to sterilise.

The bleach has made a significant reduction in contamination rate and has not adversely affected growth at all
