We are pretty fucking free in america but we're hardly a model society for the world.  Well, we are, but that's a problem that our culture is spreading imo. I don't see the problem so much in government as in the people.  A nation of sleepwalkers enslaved by their desires. It's up to each of us as americans to improve ourselves and detach from the fucking creature comforts we're all addicted to.

i just don't understand the passion people have for their "freedom"

the government doesnt "give" you freedom. you're born free, into a society that puts restrictions on that freedom. and you wave a flag around celebrating woohoo

i appreciate that i don't live under dictator rule. but just because the US is "the best" doesn't make it fuckin good. you'vr still got a lot of shit to work out

There not seeking freedom :facepalm: There seeking work and a living. 1.3 million farmers were displaced cause of NAFTA, which opened up the borders for corporations to move in and flood the market with cheap corn and goods so they could put the farmers out of business buy up there land and employee them at near sweatshop rates that would be illegal in america Also robbing you americans of the jobs you could have been working. Economic enslavement by Transnational corporations.

I see what you did there.
These two terms are really relative though. The irony of the 'land of the free' is that it's made up of a nation enslaved by financial debt which is another form of indentured servitude. I think about the idea of ultimate freedom where one would be able to do whatever they desire regardless of moral value or consequence. Which of course is impossible with laws, human rights and other enforcing agents of Peace.  Someone said, "Your freedom ends where others begins" which basically equates to you being able to do anything up until a certain point; or until you infringe on someone elses freedom.
Going even further, where does our freedom begin and global peace end? Probably in our countries attempts at policing the rest of the world for things like supposed weapons of mass destruction. It's more like mass-distraction because we need the freedom to drive around burning up precious fossil fuels and we will compromise another countries peace to keep it that way.

I haven't read Howard Zinn, but I hear him referenced frequently. I can't help but assume he is just another person writing another book biased by his own opinions about things. I guess I'll have to give it a read though.

As far as the whole libertarian stance is concerned, I see many people who get swept up by the "freedom" aspect of the movement, without considering other ramifications of their message. Yeah, I want pot to be legal, but I also am a firm believer in compassionate social services, which people like Ron Paul and other libertarians would LOVE to see completely destroyed.

Stonehenge?  :facepalm: We put men on the moon.  Do you think the people if Rome or Egypt had the freedoms that people in America today do?  Polynesia?  They had fucking cannibals.  Portugal?  What of it?  They're totally fucked.  The bill for their freedom from work is come due and it isn't pretty.

I don't feel enslaved at all and honestly the only thing I feel repressed with is prohibition.  Times are changing though, we're moving forward, this country is not perfect but life is good here(for me it is at least) and I have faith that it will be better for my kids and grand kids.

There are those who would say that being born in the USA is like winning the birth lottery. I mean really, I don't work overly hard, and can afford to go out to eat whenever I want, go out for drinks whenever I want, buy and smoke all the weed that I want. It really is OK.
