CNN's 'Heroes'

I am uncertain of the details, but they are honoring people nominated as heroes and choosing 10. One guy is a Cambodian who planted thousands of mines as a child soldier of the Khmer Rouge.

Now he's dedicated his life to removing many of those mines. Is undoing a mess you made, while commendable, worthy of being called a 'hero'?

I think it is a worthy moral example, that many people could relate to aspects of thier own lives.

I don't think adding a label makes any difference to be honest.

Corollary:

It's often the case that someone will do something really terrible, like murder, then in prison change and start helping inmates and teaching classes and such.

They get early release.

Why doesn't that work backwards? Someone who helps people and teaches selflessly, then commits murder rots in prison?

Why does good followed by bad = bad but bad followed by good = good? Why is the order of deeds relevant? Makes no sense to me.

In a rape case, they always focus on the victim who was raped. Think of the billions of women the guy did NOT rape. That is a lot of self control.

If he was a child soldier, you could argue he wasn't really responsible for what he was ordered to do, but was really more of a victim. And now he's feeling bad about what he was part of and risking his life removing mines, or well at least removing mines.. altogether, that almost qualifies as saintly.

Gee, I stole a guy's wallet and then helped him look for it.  I must be a hero too.  Too bad someone didn't put a bullet through the little shit's head.  Now he would be a hero.

It's the not order that's important, it's who you are in the present.  And if you were bad in the past but good in the present, and you're already in prison, then they're gonna let you out earlier. But if you were great in the past but now you're a raving lunatic, sorry bro you're stayin in jail.
