Why reincarnation dosen't make sense...
    #13482772 -

I struggle to fathom the idea that anybody can be "reborn"

When I say "I", I am referring to me as a body, as well as my thinking process, personality, possessions, and experiences
So "I" is really a collection of all the things that make a body+brain into a talking, thinking person.
So every second, we are collecting new experiences, and this "I" changes with every moment and event which I experience

To say that "I" will be reborn into say, a storeclerk named Joe, is illogical
The only way that I can be reborn, is if all of my possessions, experiences, personality, and thoughts would be applied to a newborn baby as it comes out the womb

I am probably not being clear, but if you understand what I saying, and agree/disagree, try and explain it a bit better than I did as well as your reasoning for your opinion

I am with you on this and yes - you make sense.

I posted nearly the same thing years ago, not in regards to reincarnation specifically, but as to life-after-death.

First I asked people to define themselves and it was always in regards to their place of birth, ethnicity, physical traits, gender, accomplishments, experiences, talents, family, friends, etc.

Then I asked if they believed they would continue after death. Many said yes and then I explained they everything they defined as 'I' would be taken away by death. So what was this 'I' that would continue?

Of course the fall-back position was the ill-defined and mysterious essence or soul. Fail!

My atoms will be recycled, but to say my consciousness will somehow continue is on par with the other world religions IMO.

You are describing the EGO.. everything which you associate with to be "yourself" but not what is fundementally purely you. You are right though it will all more or less be destroyed.

That is why Buddhists specifically call it rebirth not reincarnation.

After you die you will find yourself in a new body and will have forgotten everything.. Just like you did last time.

So when you wrote 'forgotten everything', you did not mean it. Check.

What are you?

Are you you without memory? Because that will be gone after death, Are you you without emotion? Because those brain chemicals will be gone after death, Are you you without thinking in a physical process? Because you will have no brain after death, Are you you without stimulus? Because it seems without a nervous system or senses or a brain that wouldn't exist after death.

What are you? It seems to me even with an afterlife/ rebirth you should fear an atheist death because when all these components dies that's what it will be. If you die you die, an atheist can give a poetic interpretation of death where their energy and atoms live on forever, but THEY still die.

Aside from a powerful OBE I've had when dying in a hospital I can give no reason why a persons energy living on should give them any comfort.

By interpreting reality clearly I mean interpreting what you are clearly and how it is possible for you to exist moment to moment. All you are is the realization of yourself in the moment. Beyond time. You are none of the things that cause the realization of the self you are just the realization of yourself.

Emotion, memory, experience, personality are all by-products of the self. Which is - the realization of the self in the moment.

There will always be reality to create the circumstances for the realization of the self to occur.

If our brains and sensory organs are jus means of experience then either

A- Why can we go blind or have mental diseases? Shouldn't our soul be able to see without eyes?

B- Because we can experience without senses or organs a rock could be as conscious as you or I.

Explain in depth if you can if I am wrong. Not trying to be a dick but I'm just saying the conscious isn't magical, even if there is something after death.

I did not mean to say that the mind causes the body.

I just mean that without conscious experience or without self there would be no personality and no experience and therefore no memories to be had. So just because these things vanish doesn't necessarily mean the real you vanishes, since they are superficial.

My point is that you are merely the realization of your own self. You are not the brain that causes the realization.

So when the link with this body is severed and I physically die. A new brain will cause the realization of myself to continue and I will not know the difference.

It's kind of like how your body is pulsing in and out of existence every second, in a sense you die with each breathe yet you keep coming back. That is why the Buddha said a human life lasts a single breathe.
