Scamming on Ebay

What kind of trouble can you get in with the law if you scam people of over $1000 on ebay?  The funds would be sent to a paypal account without a bank or credit card and fake name.  Those funds would then be transferred to another paypal account with a fake name but a bank account to transfer the funds to.  What are the chances of getting busted?

For high risk transactions they will hold the transactional funds in escrow until the package is delivered with tracking information. also it's not difficult to track back through a couple of accounts and then you're possibly looking at grand larceny charges.

I scammed a few people through ebay once when i was younger much more stupid.  What I did was set up my paypal with a checking account I no longer used but was still open.  I then went and bought several products (from several different people) that had a Buy It Now option  and promised fast shipping.  I processed all the payments immediately, overdrafting my bank account.  Product would ship, couple days later the charge would be returned for NSF.  All I had to pay was overdraft fees.  I came out with a new JL sound system, ps2, nitrous oxide kit for my car, and a bunch of other small electronics.  Closed all accounts, never heard anything from it after.  I now have stronger values and am against scamming people.  Although I am still ok with robbing corporations and government whenever possible.  Im pretty sure this scam would no longer work as this was like 6 years ago.  SO dont try it.  Or do.  And go to jail.

I don't see how a brilliant plan like that could possibly fail. We all know it's impossible to track someone online unless they voluntarily divulge their real name. And Paypal is a small amateur project without any real experience or resources to pursue a case of grand theft. Be sure to get back to me in 8 - 12 months and let me know how it worked out!

did something similar, i stole games/movies from different stores and sold them for cheap on ebay, i did it for a good 2 years practically every day untill i finally got busted at the store stealing, just got 20 hours of community service and no record whatsoever.

Petty theft and grand larceny carry different consequences. plus you were stealing from giant corporations that have risk management and accounts for losses its not as easy to look the other way for someone selling a few items on ebay.

You can scam people on ebay, but you have to do it correctly.

Heres a common one.

Order and item, pay for item, item is shipped. You receive the item, and you send a message stating to item is damaged. They offer a replacement and tell you to ship the item back to them. You tell them that you have decided against keeping this product after your experience(completely reasonable). Then you send a piece of the item back to the company. Ebay doesn't ever check tabs on item weight for shipping which is the only way to see this scam. The company receives piece of item back, lets say a power cord rather then the full computer system. Then all ebay does is check the tracking number for verification that the item was returned. In the  Ebay policy it states your money would be immediately refunded into your paypal account once the item is shown to be returned via the track number.

And the money is refunded instantly after Ebay sees the tracking number say delivered. You come out with the money and most of the item.

My friend did this with his 2 1k watt ballasts and told Ebay the power cords weren't working. The company offered to send out free replacement power cords. Once they arrived he told Ebay they sent the wrong cable and was tired of waiting and said he was just going to ship the item back and expected a full return. Ebay agreed to this. He decided to only ship the incorrect replacement cord back and received the full refund once the number said the package was delivered. He still actively uses that ebay account to purchase items and its linked to his paypal which is linked to his bank account. Ebay nor that company ever said anything about it.

ebay owns paypal. you can only pay for ebay auctions via paypal. they both charge fees for transactions, which go to the same corporation.
