In the sense that one should not murder.

Why should one not murder? Because it's wrong. Why is it wrong? Because one should not murder. Why should one not murder? Because it's wrong...

One shouldn't murder because people get displeased when you start killing folk and then they usually strap you to the electric chair.  :stoned:

He looks pretty content.  Do you think he's exhibiting death anxiety in that picture?

Mr. Cypher said:
Noteworthy, philosophy literally means the love of wisdom; if philosophy does not seek wisdom or Truth then I claim it is dead.

Perhaps it was foolish of me to claim that fundamental axioms can never change.  But what prompts this change?  How can an individual change their most basic beliefs without something drastic like neurosurgery?  Assuming an unchanging, constant environment, sane people will have the fundamental axiom that gravity exists, for instance, and moral people will have the fundamental axiom that murder is emotionally repugnant.  If moral and immoral people were to debate whether murder is right they will reach an insurmountable impasse because they differ on the basis of their logic.

Perhaps it was foolish of me to claim that fundamental axioms can never change.

No sir, that's the textbook definition. Your folly began when you suggested such an absurd thing might exist in the first place. If you want to change the definition, change the name, admit defeat, and start a new thread. Sorry, but re: my previous post in a previous thread, this is academia, not a playground of the imagination, so you can't redefine centuries old terms to make your argument seem right.

But what prompts this change?  How can an individual change their most basic beliefs without something drastic like neurosurgery?

Life experience. Brain Trauma. Poor digestion. An abrupt change of setting or circumstance. The abrupt or gradual loss of a loved on, especially one on whom you depended. The advent of mental illness. Experimentation with psychadelcis. The list goes on, and on, and on.

Assuming an unchanging, constant environment

I'm sorry, I thought we were discussing things relevant to the universe, which has never been observed by anyone who mattered to possess the above qualities.

Now, if we're talking about a fairlyland or D&D campaign setting you're writing, the totally, we can have us a little fixed moment in time with static 2 dimensional beings. Unless we're talking about the material universe, the one philosophers talk about.

sane people will have the fundamental axiom that gravity exists

I'm not gonna put a lot of work into this one. We have to assume that sane people existed at some point during the age of Antiquity, and none of them held this view.

and moral people will have the fundamental axiom that murder is emotionally repugnant.  If moral and immoral people were to debate whether murder is right they will reach an insurmountable impasse because they differ on the basis of their logic.

And again, sorry, a big fat fail. I wasn't kidding when I said our legal system is the historical extension of the ancient philosophical debate.

The legal system, as the rightful heir of the philosophical tradition, settles these disputes with the same methods the ancients might have. Furthermore, the moral people, if you can find them, who run this kind of system.... well, they always have an exception to their moral repugnance at murder, don't they? Child molesters and rapists deserve the chair, and that's the moral view.

So... if I'm to understand the point of this thread...

People sometimes disagree? Is that it? Really?

There is no true wrong or right other than what you believe. That has little to do with 'philosophy' as a whole. In fact it is through philosophy that we can realise that statements like 'person x SHOULD do y' or 'Z is WRONG' are not matters that can be determined in any objective way. They are merely beliefs. But they should still be taken seriously. It is merely undercurrents of the Enlightenment that still linger, that tell us that the subjective has no worth next to the objective
