Self-Awareness
    #1251521 -

Does anybody have any ideas on how to tell if a machine is self-aware, beyond having the machine in question simply stating itself to be so as a result of somebody programming it?

Once the machine is self-aware, I think it will no longer feel the need to prove itself to you in the context of your tests. It knows it knows- just like you know you know. And when you get down to it, that's all any of us *really* know.

everyone knows the cliche when we screw up on a computer, it's not working how we want it to, someone always say "A computer only does what you tell it to do

In a sense, aren't we all machines? we are programmed somehow, either by nature and/or nurture to do something about every situation that arises. For example, a computer sees a MP3 file and "knows" what to do with it, because it was programmed to. We see a plate of food in front of us, we know to eat it... so we are constantly being programmed...

eh forget it I lost my train of thought!! AGAIN for the second time tonight!!

maybe I should sleep

I think the machine would do everything possible to let you know that it is self-aware. You would probably ignore it and search for the bug in the software.

there's always the turing test  ...

anyways, go read heinlein's _the moon is a harsh mistress_ for the story of a computer (mike) who woke up, as told by his best friend (manueel garcia o'kelly davis) & how they planned & executed the revolution on luna...

I think there's a book on this topic: "Programming and meta-programming of the human biocomputer" by J. C. Lilly

I haven't read it, but it sounds interesting... Lilly is one of my dearest...

Hope it helps,

Andrash

Well in essence we are all biologicaly machines that just observe stuff through our 5 senses touch, sound, light, smell, and taste. Only we are biologicaly programmed with desires, the desire to eat ect. Although there is more to it than this because we are concious I think there for I am. A machine can only be aware if it knows of its own existence and is aware of pain. Because existene is suffering.

It's not quite that simple. Sure, we resemble computers in numerous ways, our brain is essentially a computer, but there is more to us then just our brains. We are not just a series of chemical reactions to our senses. We are concious beings with souls and free-will. For a computer to enter a state of consciousness, it would require the technichian to truely put his soul into his work, so to speak.

In a word, no.

But thank you for bringing this to our attention.

It would be hard to tell, if not impossable. It really depends on the machine- if it were a robot built with 5 senses like we humans have, then it could be easier, otherwise the contiousness is only contious in another reality that we cannot precieve.

What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?
