Happiness is internal
    #12347787 -

I think this thinking is mostly used as an excuse by spiritual wanabees not to make any changes to their lifestyle and habits. I certaintly used it a lot back in the day and would warn anyone against falling into the trap of thinking that they can just sit there all day doing nothing and being peaceful/happy.

it is a result of both internal and external stimuli...if n e thinks otherwise question me and b blown out the water.  what we need to understand is that if we change our surroundings and our settings our emotional health will in turn change and slightly in turn our physical health as well. our internal is influenced by external...if we saw death all the time it would be normal and we would have no reaction whereas someone who grows up in the burbs sees a massacre and loses there mind!

we need to make active changes if we want change...time is a fake enemy that most believe in too heavily

ya feel meh?

Internal is the only one we can control.
Internal changes manifest externally.
The external then provides more sensory information about this change.
I tend to see it as a feedback loop.

Inner change -> external manifestation -> echo

word is bond. Once we realize that we can control the external through the internal does the ball start rolling. Once we open our eyes and see it is a feedback loop then we are free.  but if we dont know this and we still focus on the internal nothing will get done. so active introspection or internal stimulation is the only way to make that a positive thing, other then that, sitting on your ass is a waste of time.

and i think ill kick it for a while, dis is fun!

Oh yeah, I agree, sitting on your ass isn't going to do much... unless you watch what happens when you do sit on your ass.
But most meditations emphasize observing not only what goes on internally, but also observing what occurs externally.
Witnessing the effects of thoughts on your bodily sensations, for instance.
It's sitting on your ass, but there's more going on than just sitting.
It's training to watch bodily sensations and thoughts while in a more dynamic world.

If you just try to jump into the deep end of the pool before knowing how to swim, you may eventually learn, but it's probably not the easiest way.
And some may even drown.

kickle, i can give you another metaphor that says exactly the opposite of "If you just try to jump into the deep end of the pool before knowing how to swim, you may eventually learn, but it's probably not the easiest way. And some may even drown."

how do you go into the ocean? do you tippy-toe into the ocean? NO, you jump right in.

I'm sure context makes all the difference.
I've witnessed people metaphorically drowning, and it wasn't until they were told they weren't swimming that they even tried.

Hm.. I rather like happiness.. I think I'm gonna strive for that.

However, I think the whole idea here is that while I'm seeking that which makes me happy, I should take in and appreciate all of my experiences fully as they happen, rather than obsessing about some far off happiness that I'm desperately grasping for.

i'd say it's less of a feedback loop and more of a choice.

but it could be like a feedback loop when you make said choice.

happiness is only temporary and it will go, so striving for happiness is attaching to happiness, and since it is temporary this means suffering. it's all about realizing the true self. not about striving for happiness. find your true self, guys... not in the way you THINK the buddhists wanted to tell you. just find your own integrity and honesty. find out that you really lose your integrity so often. you give it away. you give away your power and freedom very often too. like when you speak to your boss, you speak from a different position than your self. find your true self and find out that this self is everything that matters. bring it out in every situation and see the difference.
