Digestion and its links to Schizophrenia, addiction, and things like ADHD?
    #12112484 -

I found this really interesting and have personally noticed a lot of this in myself. When my body seems to be digesting poorly (IBS, celiac) I'm more prone to things like sadness and getting lost in my head. And when any of those problems are solved my mind is so much clearer and there is an enormous change from "deep fog" to "clear sunny day". Food directly gives me vitality and I can eat a lot more instead of having the feeling that it just sits and makes me nauseated.

There seems to be some link between intestinal health, dopamine, and different states of mind. Which is simplified because there seems to be not much out there describing this stuff. Maybe at times our intestines overgrow bad bacteria, each leaving out a unique toxin which leads to a specific emotion which starts a kind of cycle where both that toxin and emotion mess with a kind of hormone? I don't know, but I would love to see a lot more on this. Another thing I do notice is that mescaline and acid both kind of act like digestive tonics when I take them and after a lot of purging and dehydration my stomach feels so much better.

And don't forget that Buddha was said to have been nourished (went off ascetic diet that other confused monks where on) before his awakening. I don't mean to simplify Buddhism that much but definitely noticed that he understood after being "nourished" rather than just "fed". I came across this book because I've been having serious IBS flare ups from just innocent things like rice and potatoes.

The stomach/brain chapters are in the middle IIRC:

Anyone have ANYTHING to say about this? I keep looking into it more and more and sometimes am surprised to hear that the more eccentric and sometimes even genius types have some sort of digestive problems. Kurt Cobain's undiagnosed problems actually cost him his life (addicted to heroin to escape the pain and probably lost track of himself through this and other ways). IMO our next medical "breakthroughs" should be first heavily reducing the Standard American Diet and then focusing on digestive awareness since a great deal of today's diseases can be cured in this simple way.

I wish I could get ahold of interested doctors to encourage further research but ehh don't know how to do that.
