I don't doubt that sometimes we may focus too much on finding others that are a lot like us already.
In my experience these relationships can lead to dead ends pretty quick. (It happened after a year or so for me.)

We can learn so much from our friends (ie, gaining new perspectives).

My best friends right now are people who I never thought I could be friends with. I just oepned my mind a little bit (suspending judgement) and learned to regulate my emotions a little bit (ie, not being so succeptable to hurt) 
Also a little bit of LSD went long way when it came to demolishing old preconcieved notions about people.
