Odd/interesting.
    #11836112 -

Most days I do a little relaxation exercise. I have a CD that I put on and I usually get my body into a very relaxed state. Usually I end up in a kind of reverie state. Thoughts and images flow randomly past in disconnected dreamlike sequence. But here's what's weird. Sometimes when I come to my "senses" or normal waking state I notice that my mind has been involved in a philosophical debate on some issue. The thought process is very rational and in depth. It may or may not be something I have been currently thinking about. But "I" did not initiate the debate. Not the I that is posting right now and thinking about all this. It just starts and stops on it's own.

I'm sure others experience this. Can anyone explain what's going on?

I have been recently thinking about something similar.

I've noticed two kinds of thinking. In one I seem to be directing the thought and am aware of each thought step. It's like I stop the thought at each branching point in the thought tree and analyze the possible thought paths, and decide which path to take.

The other kind of thought just goes on its own, a stream of consciousness and could be some kind of fantasy, complex philosophical debate, or just about anything. There is much less awareness of this second type of thought and there doesn't appear to be any self directing it, it is quite capable of doing its own thing no matter how complex.

I believe practicing meditation can train you to watch this self operating thought without disturbing it, and is why thought is considered to be just another object in the mind.

Maybe your mind created some sort of auto-pilot personality which operates independently from your main personality.

You're posting here so much you're daydreaming about it.

When I trip the personalities on the shroomery are recreated in my mind and give me their perspectives on whatever it is I'm thinking about.

Yeah this has been happening for years and I've just become aware enough to notice that it does not operate from the "I" personality. Or something.

I have some other strange phenomena to report. I seem to be remembering dreams in long chains from the past. A certain type of thought will trigger a remembered dream which will then spiral into a long chain of remembered dreams which often took place many years or even decades ago. Sometimes twenty or more dreams are remembered. This can happen at any time of day or night and is becoming very regular. The dreams often take place in unknown locations that do not seem to be on this planet. In fact some have several moons if the dream takes place at night.

How many tentacles do you have in these dreams? Might help us to narrow the planet down.

I used to experience the same thing when I was tripping more.  Get's crazy.
:otd:

Ice: I wake up with the same auto-conversation going on...  Don't exactly know what to make of it, yet.

I was just sleeping
then I woke up, put on my housecoat and came down to the internet
and found I had this conversation going with icelander while I was waking up
and I do not know what it was about but it was really good
so I got up
and everything fell apart from there.

was it like that?

This is quite a thought provoking thing you speak of. I have a couple things I can say, although they don't answer anything. I close my eyes and picture a moving scene sometimes, to give my eyes a rest. I almost automatically see an image from early childhood that I have forgotten entirely, until that moment. If someone said to me "hey, remember when you were 5 and..." I might get a very vague inkling of the remembrance, but not the spontaneous visual immersion that randomly happens.

Secondly, when lying in bed at night or when waking I sometimes have really good music in my head. The individual 'tracks' seem very clear and it sounds so familiar that I am compelled to try to compare it to something I've heard before, upon which it evaporates.

Sometimes that music thing is a philosophical juxtaposition instead. Again, it seems the lines of reason have clear and classical outlines, but they do not rise to the surface with the rest of my consciousness as I wake.

By the way, have you ever been to Iceland? It sounds like such a cool place.

Doesn't this non self barely aware thought process happen to most people while they are driving?

It's like the attention is divided between driving and thinking and there is limited awareness so both are semi unconscious.

its also interesting that simple awareness might have big changes on the the thought path. imagine your in this semi aware state streaming along and then suddenly become aware of your thoughts - suddenly this changes the thoughts. That seems very strange to me.

lately I've been trying to see what directs the thought steps in the unaware thought but its very difficult because once i lose awareness its hard to remember to check in and see what was happening, and the memory can only look back about 15-30 seconds or so. if this makes sense. had some beers and sleep is calling.

this stuff is new and interesting and intriguing to me.

I've noticed that when driving, the driving is left to a more routine part of my mind giving a higher/separate plane of creativity and imagination room to explore/wander.  Hypnotic.  I also experiment with trying to become aware of more content within my visual field which can be interesting.

reminds me of falling asleep as well, again between awake and asleep is a semi conscious state which is more creative.

perhaps the awareness associated with an 'I' limits the creativity. semi consciousness limits the awareness originating from I

is there an awareness that is not owned by I that can remember?

im mixing up awareness and consciousness and drifting out of counscious awareness myself right now.

I tend to think that it is the awareness beyond 'I' that remembers ALL.  The Record, or what have you. :super:

Most people I've known associate a conscious awareness of "I" with what they are consciously aware of, and all else as something other than "I". Though, I disagree with that sort of thinking. I came to an understanding that consciousness is controlled by unconscious processes. I am not conscious of many of my mental processes, such as how I understand language, but those mental processes are still "I" as much as any part of me that I am conscious of. So although it may feel like mental processes sometimes are being initiated by something other than "I", IMO it is tending toward superstition/delusion to be influenced by such thinking outside of just enjoying fanciful entertainment from it.

I'd say your seeing there is no solid 'I' behind mental movements

Well I talked to Veritas about it. She said that our brains operate not as a single "I" but on several levels at once. Like a computer that has several programs running or a radio station that is next to other stations. The main station is what we are currently listening to and takes our attention and is so loud that it drowns everything else out. But if the station drifts on the dial a little then one can hear another station in the background. Something like that.
