Can't be real of course, just think of it. The population figure on earth is growing at a regular pace (I don't exactly know if the progression is exponential, geometric or arithmetic or whatever, but it IS regular, it can be described quite accurately by a mathematical function). In the case of war, for instance, the progression of the death rate would be much more chaotic. It depends on the level of sophistication of the war, the technical advancement of that particular world, but even a quite primitive war would display peaks and troughs in death rates, it wouldn't be as regular.
This would especially be the case with natural disasters, but then, he didn't mention those. Think of it, however: a huge disaster in one reality means a huge and very sudden baby boom in the next. I'm not talking about a post-WWII-like baby boom, spread over more than a decade, but of a mass instant baby boom: millions of women getting pregnant within a few hours. So disaster in one reality breeds delayed disaster in the next.

I... kind of doubt it...
