Constantly questioning the universe, life ect.
    #3010907 - 08/16/04 11:23 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

For the past 2-3 months, I have been thinking a lot about the nature of life, the universe why am I here, ECT. I have the type of personality that when I get something into my head its all that I think about for quite a while. I normally enjoy thinking philosophically, but this is getting very annoying as I cannot read a book or watch some TV without thinking about this. I have also been off weed for this time because I find it makes it worse and tottaly ruins my high. I'm sure that other people have been in this same type of situation, so will this eventually pass? And is there anyway of sorta shutting my brain up short of stabbing it with a Q-tip?

Thanks for you time.

deff is right, unless you go surround yourself with really negative dense people for at least 2 weeks. Get caught up in their dramas and........ you'll pull out of it as you get sucked back into it.

I find, that when I type my thoughts out, it's a way of grounding them and then they stop cycling through my head. Even if you are to shy to post them somewhere, type it all and then delete it.

I think posts where people type caught up in thought streams rock hard! Not many are found here. Shit comes out of people they didn't even know they knew. They make for good reads.

I would be curious to know whats running through your head. Give it a whirl. When the questions and what not pour out, space opens for more answers and questions to pour in. I have to laugh because once it starts, it never stops, not for long anyway.

Oh what a journey it is!

Sometimes it's helpful to keep distracted from heavy thinking. Like all things taken to extremes, pondering the big questions too often can be destructive. Sometimes people have inclinations toward philosophical thinking because they are otherwise idle, or lazy, and have little else to occupy their mind with. Sometimes it is because we wish to escape our fears by drowning them in larger concepts. We can avoid either of these traps by entertaining our philosophical musings in moderation.

Play Rummoli, or some kind of board game. Read a book not on the subject. Spend time with loved ones.

Yeah, I feel the same way alot of the time. I can definately relate about being high and then thinking about those questions and getting depressed or confused.
But the truth is life is about LIVING, not thinking about life. In the end you may not be able to understand this existance in any conceptual way,and you must accept that. It doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. In fact, I think you will see that the truth of life lies outside any conceptual understanding. Kind of like how infinity is incomprehensible to linear and finite minds, ultimate truth can seem incomprehensible to the inquisitive mind. But you can still experience it.

All the philosophical thinking is sort of our brain's way of slowly getting bearings on the things we learn through experience. Sometimes you are just thinking in circles, and you need to just let the thought go. Thought loops can be like bad dreams that go on for months. But if you have the right attitude you can come to terms with it and become a more grounded person. I think in time those experiences become wisdom and second nature, and you won't have to think about them as much. It just takes time.

Also meditation is key. You may also try reading about Buddhism, Hinduism, Gnosticism, Stoicism or Taoism. For me Buddhism has been a helpfull guide in the struggle to get a grip when faced with such a mind boggling existance. I find that of all 'religions' it seems to be the most true to experience and practical in its application. Taoism is also very cool.

It won't pass if you let it constantly fascinate you like this

If you get some hobbies and some women or whatever you may find yourself spending less time thinking about this kind of thing

Thinking philosophically a lot does not have to be a bad thing. It is only bad if you view it as such. Rarely does an hour go by when I do not think philosophical thoughts. I find it helps me deal with issues in life and it is something I must do. I find that if I go through the day without thinking philosophically then I am just experiencing and I have sucked into the void of experience. I view existence as what occupies all nodes of experience for eternity. By thinking philosophically I am above this void. Even though these philosophical musings are experiences themselves, they are profound experiences that seem to put everything in its right place (radiohead pun intended).

Now I have to ask: Why do you need to THINK about philosophy to deal with your everyday issues? It should be something that just goes with you all the time without thinking.

Well, for instance say I am undergoing a very stressful few days about something relatively serious in my life that could determine the course of the next year of my life. In order to fully understand the gravity of existence and everything I need to keep thinking to myself about my place in existence (which is nothing in my view). It's not just enough to have the idea at the back of my mind, but sometimes I need to meditate and contemplate it for a little to set myself at ease. So I guess I could simply say that for me thinking philosophically is a method for meditation and relaxation which in turn helps me deal with everyday issues such as stress.

Yup, that's the difference between knowledge and awareness. Sure, most people know things are made of atoms, but rarely does one include this in their worldview. This is especially true with philosophy, which is why I think that philosophy mixed with meditation can change the questioning and knowledge into awareness and experience. Or mushrooms :mushroom2:

Yes, a very amuzing book.  I would also recommend Jeff Noon's Pollen and Vurt.

Or you could turn the tables completely and read the Alchemist, or the Kabbalah Tree

Meditation is also key.

When my mind enters a cycle of racing through thoughts and emotions and I get that feeling of being "stuck", i normally indulge in psillies at a local park or the everglades.  And most often enough, MDMA at the Ocean.

Take into consideration why and how you are breatheing now, and how this moment, of all moments...is bliss, Gone, great, done,...Awaken to the next moment.  What does it all mean, every moment?

Nothing that YOU cannot handle.  Dont let your mind take over your sanity, this happens all too often. (Hey, I didnt say that I always take my own advice   )

Psychedelics normally ease me of bad cycle thinking.  For some people, a high dosage of an unstable mushroom trip will make the situation worse.

Just be.  The day is great, and the sun arose this morning on the East with the most beautiful colors to surround me.  Engrossed in the beauties of the morning, everything is well, as the water is flowing, and the air is clean.

Recognize Oneness throughout the spiral.  Be calm, my little minds.  indulge in Mogwai

-Ares

--------------------
A plethora of music aspirations control my temptations of future revelations beyond "now". The percussion, and the heart beat of my love and devotion. The rhythm goes beyond, prying into the third eye, releasing the creativity held so far inside. The melodicies, through the out of tune pianos and broken classical guitars...there lies a beauty. A beauty as prevelent as the fire inside. To release these energies is pure ecstacy, to deveop these gifts is sacred. The vocality, so pure as can be, shying away from herself, lies within me. For the underlying serenitity, this is what I live for. I plea for harmony, and nothing more. Music equals love. Creation of love leads to the procreativity of the World, and it's spirals and puddles prevailing.

That kind of thinking is..was my natural state, still is to some degree, but there came a time when it pretty much ground to a halt...that sucked. when your used to constantly formulating new questions, finding answers, and so on and on, and then it grinds to a halt..no new questions no new answers..its very disconcerting, or atleast it was for me...on the upside i had what i can only term as a kensho like experience shortly after all that, which to this day has radically and literally shifted the way i percieve. Not only do i think different, things literally look different..very odd...but cool. The only thing that sucks is when you have experienced what is basically a perfect moment, and then u fail to stay in that moment, its kinda hard to adjust. I have kept something of the experience but no longer persist in the state...and damn do i miss it, i was completely alone, doing nothing, yet it was the single best.. most perfect moment of my entire life.

Sincerely,
That which is, and has no choice but to be.
