Fasting
    #1179745 - 12/30/02 12:26 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

I've recently been thinking about doing a cleansing/detoxifying/spiritual fast and was wondering if anybody had any experience with it. Here is an brief article about therapeutic fasting: http://www.holistic.com/lonny/fasting.htm

Digestion is a taxing activity on the body, and after several days with no solid food, toxins are supposedly flushed out, heart rate slows, blood pressure lowers, and you feel more calm and peaceful. In addition, without food for the body to worry about, meditation and spiritual realization, reaching your "center" and seeing the world in an unattached state, can become easier.

Has anyone ever tried fasting? How did it go? Did you consume nothing but water or did you drink juice, broth, etc? Any benefits spiritual or otherwise?

would having less energy be accountable for this state, or is this more of an "aware calmness" rather than tiredness? this sounds interesting, i'd be willing to try it.

P.S. no solid food being digested = no solid food being..well u know...

ive fasted for about 2 days (i wasnt on some mission to aquire peace, heh), and it certainly did make my mind more focused. I dont understand why it would tho. Mebbe yer body stops asking fer food after it realizes yer fasting? I dunno, heh. But it definitely works

Did 10 days on water in my 20s. Was very difficult. No real benefits other than a drop of 10 pounds and the knowledge that I could complete such a daunting task. Noticed no spiritual dimension whatsoever.

Attempt 3 days first. Plan no social activities during that time. After a few days your body will reek like you have never experienced. This indicates a high level of cleansing. During this time you are likely to be exhausted as the toxins being released will completely ennervate you.

On a longer fast, I would use highly diluted juice, like one orange or lemon per gallon of water.

All "spiritual dimensions" aside Swami, would you recommend fasting as a way to purify the body and/or mind?

Yes, if you have some time set aside and are gentle to your body.
