I'm sure you'll see a lot of opposition to the cat being declawed but I think a lot of it is irrational and overly-emotional. As long as the surgery is done competently, there isn't going to be any harm done to the cat. It certainly isn't necessary to have it done, our two cats aren't declawed and we don't have any problems because we've had the opportunity to be around them long enough to be able to address scratching behavior so that it isn't destroying anything, but I can definitely imagine that there are situations in which it can be more preferential to have a cat declawed.
Despite the emotional protests of "it's mutilation! its their bones being cut!", as long as its done correctly it usually doesn't cause any problems for the cat, and as long as that's the case I don't really see what difference it makes. A bit of a bone missing, yeah its better to avoid doing that to a cat, but does it really change anything for them, not really.
Here's a case in which a stray cat with a broken leg is going to be given a chance to have a full and happy life, albeit without some claws and a bit of bone and nerves. Definitely isn't the end of the world or anything bad for the cat to be missing those claws. Again, not necessary to do it, better to avoid doing it if you can, I wouldn't personally do it, but if someone does decide to do it, it doesn't really matter as long as the surgery is performed competently, which can be assumed that it usually is. No knee-jerk emotional hippy reactions required.
