Immortality
    #11589376 -

Discussion is fairly straightforward and hopefully my post makes sense cause I'm real hung over.  The question is would you want to live forever.  If you could would you.  'Cause I'm a huge Atmosphere fan I'll quote him for my response.

And if I did have a choice
I'd never want to live forever
Just let me have a voice so I can make my points
I can't imagine running a race with no finish line

We do live forever because matter can't be destroyed.

It'll be nice to get rid of the burden of consciousness though.

In the form of another creature years down the line perhaps. But everything is connected, we're all a part of everything, to have no consciousness at all wouldn't be a bad thing.

Maybe one's molecular assembly provides one's consciousness.  IF that's the case, then would the components of our awareness disperse as our physical bodies do? seeing as the two are seamlessly attached and are apparently one item, ultimately.

Yes but one that engine conks out, so does consciousness.

I agree in a sense.  That is, I agree that the consciousness that the particular dynamic of the brain provides for conks out.  That is, your consciousness as the individual you are probably dissolves.  But if consciousness is tied to matter in the way described a few posts back, then it must also be elemental, in the way matter is.

So what I'm thinking maybe is, that every unique molecule, every unique atom 'conotates' its own 'brand' of consciousness, its own conscious identity, and that the synergy between the right grouping of them can bring about the net result of my consciousness, or yours.  So, the unified awareness between our collective parts, I agree, probably ceases at death, but only because it is dissipating, in that our conscious 'elements' disperse and recycle in the same way we see material things doing, because matter and consciousness are extensions of one another, and therefore representative of one another.

Anyway, just a thought.

The human race seems to be obsessed with immortality, but the idea seems ridiculous to me. I definitely do not like the idea of immortality. I don't even like the idea of living a very long time (say, hundreds of years), unless everyone else can live a very long time as well. I honestly hope I move on before I lose my mental faculties.

Also, Planck time does not imply that time cannot be divided further. Planck time is the amount of time it takes light to travel one Planck length. Planck time is the limit- the smallest amount of time- that physics is capable of talking about. That doesn't mean it's the smallest amount of time that can be discussed in relation to things non-physical.

Immortality is Paradoxical in its Nature

Poid said:
One of the qualities of life is that it dies; if something is immortal (i.e.- incapable of dying), then by definition, it was never alive. But, also by definition, something that is immortal is said to have eternal "life".

Am I the only one here who is being sorta mind fucked by this?

From Immortality - Wikipedia:
Quote:
Immortality (or eternal life) is the concept of living in a physical or spiritual form for an infinite or inconceivably vast length of time.

As immortality is the negation of mortality—not dying or not being subject to death—it has been a subject of fascination to humanity since at least the beginning of history. The Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the first literary works, dating back at least to the 22nd century BC, is primarily a quest of a hero seeking to become immortal. What form an unending human life would take (as well as whether it is subject to incapacitation), or whether the soul exists and possesses immortality, has been a major point of focus of religion, as well as the subject of speculation, fantasy, and debate.

It is not known whether human physical immortality is an achievable condition. Biological forms have inherent limitations which may or may not be able to be overcome through medical interventions or engineering. As of 2009, natural selection has developed biological immortality in at least one species, the jellyfish Turritopsis nutricula, one consequence of which is a worldwide population explosion of the organism.

Certain scientists, futurists, and philosophers, such as Ray Kurzweil, advocate that human immortality is achievable in the first few decades of the 21st century, while other advocates believe that life extension is a more achievable goal in the short term, with immortality awaiting further research breakthroughs farther into an indefinite future. Aubrey de Grey, a researcher who has developed a series of biomedical rejuvenation strategies to reverse human aging (called SENS), believes that his proposed plan for ending aging may be implementable in two or three decades. The absence of aging would provide humans with biological immortality, but not invulnerability to death by physical trauma: According to 2002 statistical data, the odds of an individual being traumatically killed are once in every one thousand and seven hundred years.

Eternal life can also be defined as a timeless existence, which is also not known for certain to be achievable, or even definable, despite millennia of arguments for eternity. Wittgenstein, in a notably non-theological interpretation of eternal life, writes in the Tractatus that, "If we take eternity to mean not infinite temporal duration but timelessness, then eternal life belongs to those who live in the present."

Wow thread exploded.  On the subject of planck time (h), based on our physical knowledge it is the smallest unit of time possible.  Serves as the foundation of quantum physics.  Quantum physics was originally defined based on "quanta" meaning the ability to divide the transition between electron orbitals as distinct jumps, which has some resemblance to h in the form of E=hv.

OrgoneConclusion said:
Thoughts and neural processing time is many magnitudes slower than planck time.

This is also false.  Consciousness, although not fully understand is still limited to the computational processes of the human brain.  Synaptic connections have limited speed of informational processing which is actually quite slow, around 100m/s.  Chemical processing is even slower.

The thread got somewhat derailed questioning what is consciousness or time but neglecting a main fact.  Many of us here have experienced moments of timelessness or seemingly infinite moments.  For most of this these don't last for infinite amounts of time, though they may seem to.  The question I want to get at is would living forever, knowing life had no endpoint, detract from life, make it less exciting worthwhile.

This doesn't make any sense, you say what he said is false, then you offer evidence for agreeing with him.

There is no proof that consciousness arises from physical processes. Period. It's an assumption that 'materialists' make that is entirely unfounded.

There may be no "proof" but there is evidence. Can you show reasonable evidence that consciousness does not come from a physical process?

I don't see my contradiction?  Planck's constant is 6.63E-34 J-s, which is a really small ass number and represents a limit for position and energy.  This represents a physical constant but anyways moving on, uncertainty principle isn't that necessary for the discussion.

There are lots of indications that consciousness arises from physical processes.  Such as the ability of anesthesia to induce unconsciousness, i.e. an acting physical process.  Furthermore if consciousness has no link to physical processes, why, if I bash you in the head hard enough would you loose consciousness?  Neuroscientist often indicate gamma activity as being indicative of consciousness about 60Hz, which says you can't discern moments of time less than .0167 seconds or so.  You are right of course that their is no proof that consciousness arises from a physical process, nor is their proof that you exist and are real.  The point is, do not ignore the vast improvements we have made in science out of ignorance.

Quantum consciousness is actually the big buzz word now which ignores materialism but still embraces known science.  To make consciousness an unknowable God entity completely independent from reality is a fallacy and laziness; it's an excuse for not looking at all we have learned and are learning.

Your definition of consciousness and my definition of consciousness are not the same. According your defition, a housefly can be conscious. I do not believe a housefly possesses consciousness.

How far will you take that?

What is your definition of consciousness?  I view it as a continuum with say horseflies on one end and us on the other.  As the above mentioned how far would you take your assessment.  I'd surely argue that my dog is conscious from direct experience and would guess certain other animals are also.  Not to hark to much, but as soon as you consider yourself to be special or unique you eliminate lots of valid possibilities.

I think your question is for morrowasted.

Not to hark to much, but as soon as you consider yourself to be special or unique you eliminate lots of valid possibilities.
