Biological Immortality for the Human Race? * 1
    #16176524 -

I've been reading up on a lot of things about biological Immortality, I've read different theories and have come to the conclusion that in 25 to 45 years humans will have the ability to become Immortal in the sense that we will have the ability to stop aging, a bullet or crash crash or disease could still kill you though. The prospect of immortality opens up a big can of worms and many question yet to be answered.

Who will get to be immortal?

What kind of laws would be made pertaining to immortality?

How much would it cost?

What would happen to religion?

How would it affect populations and what not?

Is immortality be good or bad for mankind?

If given the opportunity would you want to become immortal?

I've been alive for over 50 million years and let me tell you it gets old after awhile. :satansmoking:

Humans will almost definitely never achieve immortality because the chance of dying in an accident will be 100% given enough time. What does seem probable in the foreseeable future, is a significant increase in average life span, at least for those who can afford it. But if we learn to drastically increase life spans and don't put a serious curb on spawning, our species will be fucked as the resources we are used to dry up even more quickly than they currently are.

It seems likely that we will be able to drastically increase life spans way before we are capable of creating virtual reality that feels as real as our current experience.

I think we will be able to stimulate receptors in our brain at will long before hyper-realistic virtual reality is possible. Imagine having a remote that lets you choose which receptors you want stimulated!

The big question you missed is: Will it actually be immortality?

I would say no. Stopping the ageing process only means you will retain youthful looks for the duration of your life. That's if it is successful. But like you said, disease will still affect you. The human life-span may be lengthened by a few decades as a result of avoiding the problems that ageing causes to your vital organs... but ageing is not the only thing that 'wears down' your body.

Not to mention, stopping the ageing process would not necessarily prevent neural degradation over time, so your quality of life will probably still get shitty.

That being said, if you could successfully renew brain matter and organs regularly, perhaps it is feasible.

But then, heart failure and cancer are by far more common causes of death than 'old age'.

I dont think much would change at all, it will be a superficial therapy for the rich and that is about as ground breaking as it will get.

The true immortals will be the robots, rest assured.

I personally think, and I think many people who are on my level will agree, anti-aging or complete abortion and reversal of senescence is possible right now, in your own brain and use of your emotional system. Emotional abuse is basically what aging is imo. A well-balanced individual will live much longer, a completely natural emotional spectrum will mean the individual will not age (note: this doesn't mean 'live forever').

There's a big difference between "live much longer" and "reversal of senescence".  You try to pitch both as if they are the same.  They are not.  You will age and die. Be glad.

Silly monkeys! Listen to this strange monkey with the knowing face (but don't try and steal it from me).

It's not a big issue, death, either way. You have to realise that. Most of our literature on it is masturbation. Personally I'd like Icelander to realise the Self so he can make the most of his years left... all he need do is investigate Ramana Marharshi's BE AS YOU ARE for now...

Eternal joy, for ever and ever and ever. Once the anger is out from our abuse, that's all that's left to do: be happy as fuck forever.

The Self = eternal joy.

Your enemy on the battlefield is literally You.

What can you do but fucking celebrate?

Sadly, evolution favours short lifespans as this causes more genetic mutations with each successive generation. While it possible to extend average lifespan, there is an upper-limit to how much is possible which is largely genetically determined. Past reproductive age, there is very little benefit in keeping an organism alive as this diverts scarce resources to the healthy. We are only alive for long enough to bone a hot cavewoman and raise kids. That's it.(genes don't care about individual survival; only reproductive survival).

And just a few threads back you were telling us how all the guru's were FOS.  But I know who is fos here and who has a ton of DA and keeps preaching so he can convince himself that there is some meaning to his personal experience.

With your posts Shakespeare comes to mind.  "Me thinks the Lady does protest too much"- Hamlet

You just made all that up to comfort yourself.  You have no more idea about what eternity holds than I do.

I find this comforting now on some level at least. I have no desire to be human for an eternity. That is a truly ugly prospect.

You're up against your own projections...

We don't necessarily think the same... my ideas could be coming from a place you have never been in the mind.

That's true but there is absolutely no evidence of that.  You seem like the typical poster here. Not to mention you didn't address what I said. That's typical also.
