Looking to puchase a handgun
    #11379621 - 11/03/09 07:57 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I want to get a handgun just to shoot with some buddies on the weekend. What's a good economically priced gun that's fun to shoot?

What can you pick one up for roughly?

Should I try and hit up a gun show to get one or a sprting store?

I was gonna say anything in this caliber. Ruger makes a little single action revolver that come with a .22 magnum chamber too, in a little box, for like 200 or 300 bucks brand new.

I buy from pawn shops/gun shops/gun shows

What up Blood.  Check out Gander Mountain. I've bought a couple handguns from them. Ammo is kinda expensive right now, but you can always pick up a big box of .22 ammo for under 20 bucks. .22's are hella fun.  If you're going to go with a bigger caliber, 9mm ammo is cheaper than .380, .40, .45, and .357 right now.  You can check out some of their handguns/prices at Ganders website:

.22s are always fun, or you could just go balls to the wall and get one of these

depends on your needs really, you can pick up a Rock Island Armory 1911 in
.45 if you want something that will double for defense, you can get a
Ruger Mark III in .22 for plinking, also look into the Makarov in .380

Or any gun shop or gun show.  Although, I've never really been a fan of buying used pistols...unless they look brand new.  Otherwise, who knows how many 1000's of rounds have been pounded through it.

There's also www.gunbroker.com ; It's like e-bay but for guns and ammo. I've only bought
ammo from there, so I'm not sure what kind of hoops you'd have to jump through to buy
a handgun. I'm guessing it's a pain in the ass though.  Good luck. Have fun.

.22 is good for shooting pop cans lol

i really like the sig sauer 220. i think you can get hose for 3-400 bucks?

i shot the .40 S&W but i think it comes in 9mm and .45 as well. 9mm is probably what you want. best power to price ratio.

Define economically priced. For some people that means $70, for some that's anything under $600.

As far as .22's, Ruger makes some nice Mark 3's. But by far my favorite .22lr was a CZ75 Kadet. But those will run you over $600.

Maybe check out the Walther p22. There are some feed issues with them, but with a polished feed ramp it's supposed to greatly improve.

My local range has a suppressed Walther p22, but it's always having issues with subsonic rounds.

If you want to go 9mm, check out the Sig Sauer p6 (p225). I recall a website selling used German police issue euro P6's for like $250 and many of them only had normal holster wear.

Not sure if you can get that kind of deal now and I sure as hell wish I would have jumped on it.

I'd get a .22 if it's just for simple target shooting. Getting a box of ammo for 3-5 bucks is a good deal.

If you want something bigger then go for a 9mm glock... but honestly my buddy has both and I enjoy shooting the .22 much better, not only is the recoil much less extreme- but the price of ammo is worth it.

HANDS DOWN get a glock! That is the only pistol I trust my life with. It will fire when it needs to. Awsome weekend gun and even better personal defense weapon. There won't be many people that disagree with the Glock. Best reliability ( thats what matters to me) than any other gun. If for some reason I had to swim, wade through mud, fall off a cliff, and some how still survive my gun will still shoot.

Fuck a Glock. Springfield XD all the way. It's how Glocks should have been made.

Or at least it addresses all of the Glock design shortcomings.

Nice gat but XD is no where near as reliable as the Glock. Facts are facts. Try shoving your XD in a puddle of mud and not having a jam in that clip.

Dude just noticed you have Federal ammo. Drop the Federal for some Speer Gold Dots. I've done test's with water, sand, and wood with both types off ammo out my glock. Someone told me to go gold dot as I always carried Federal hydra shocks. My personal test found that EVERY Gold dot mushroomed nice, while Federal was very inconsistant (only 3/10 shroomed). I hope you at least take my ammo advise if you use this for personal safty.
