martha humidity, timer settings

martha has a coolmist inside, below the bottom shelf.
martha has been lifted up about 1ft to allow use of the bottom shelf.
the coolmist is set inside and underneathe the martha.
the cover has several 3"-5" slits cut on all sides and both zippers totally unzipped (zippers have broken off).
there are trays of moist perlite in any empty spots (about half).
a small fan, set on low, pointing away, sits a few feet from the martha.
substrate will be UNcased.

cycle timer for the coolmist is currently set for 2min ON and 6min OFF.  however, the humidity is only 80% based on wet and dry bulb temps 66 and 72, respectively.

is there just too much FAE going on here?  should the fan be moved farther away?  the space isn't that big - it couldn't move that much further away.
or
should the coolmist just be set to be ON more or OFF less or both?

from researching, it seems 95%+ humidity should be obtainable with the above set up.  approaching a 1:2 or 1:1 ON/OFF ratio with the coolmist INSIDE the martha - it doesn't seem like it should have to be ON this much to obtain high humidity.  it seems most are using a 1:4 ratio or so.

If you load the set up with bulk subs (cased or un-cased) that should bring your humidity up a little.

Also, I would get the coolmist as close to the top of the setup as possible, that way it will rain the mist down upon the grow.

not to get off topic, but i have always read it should be at the bottom:

Put it at the bottom.  A cool mist needs to shoot a mist straight up about 5 feet to work properly.  Mine sit on the floor of the mini-greenhouse, one on each side of the shelves.  Cut a hole in the plastic right next to where the humidifier sits, and it will draw in some fresh air and also mix with the air inside to give you a nice 95% humidity easily.  Giving lots of fresh air in a greenhouse is easy.  Simply use a knife to cut slits and holes in several places.

Although RR argument is a valid one.  I like my coolmist near the top for reasons already stated.

Also, you never mentioned any problems with your grow specifically, I am guessing that if you throw some sub into that set up, it should work just fine.

My opinion is to keep it on the bottom.If there is a lot of space being taken up by trays you wont have to run it to much.When mine is full i turn it on for 2 min on and 10 min off.It all depends how many trays you have.http://http://

Try zipping it up half way, or all the way... getting the rH right in the marthas need some tinkering. If you have too much FAE your rH will not be able to go as high as you'd like it.

I have mine zipped up half way and slits all around. My rH stays at 90-93%... I also leave my coolmist on 24/7.

the greenhouse is sitting on a tray of perlite also.

the problem is the humidity is at 80% when it needs to be at 95%+.

your coolmist is running 24/7 INSIDE your martha?

i thought the trays of perlite in the empty spots were supposed to mimic a full martha?
i guess i'll just fiddle with the timing.

up to 3 min ON, 5 min OFF...

was hoping to not have to case, but if the humidity won't get into the 90%+, there may be no other choice.

I do 1 minute on and 20 minutes off.  But I have a coolmist and ultrasonic hooked up to the timer..  So It get's super foggy in that time period.. It maintains 98% Rh at all times..

hmmm, i have an ultra sonic, but i didn't really think it would be necessary with the cool mist already inside.

well, the martha is totally full now.  the fan in the room has been turned off for now.  still have the coolmist going 3min ON and 5min OFF.  it should be able to maintain higher humidity with all the shelves full now.  planning to run the ultra sonic outside the martha for 30min or so every few hours.  will hook the fan up to the same timer so it goes on when the us does...

it MUST be the fan!!

after doing some more reading, i am convinced.

the martha is lifted up about 1ft, so there is plenty of open air underneathe the martha where the cool mist sits.  this would allow for plenty of fae as well as co2 removal.

may still run the fan, which is, in fact, small, to coincide with the ultra sonic coming on a few times a day.  but at any rate, i am sure running it 24/7 was keeping the rH out of the 90%s.

sorry, just had to share my revelation.  :idea:

I try to avoid fans.  The cool mist is going to stir up the air enough.  Glad you found the problem.

well, it seems things are still not right.  even with the fan off the rH is still only in the low 80%s.  the martha does have several slits cut in the cover and being lifted up a bit off the ground, although creating plenty of fae, it still won't keep the rH high enough.  at the moment, the martha cannot be manually fanned or misted daily, etc.  trying to get it somewhat automated.

planning to supplement the cool mist (impeller) with an ultrasonic to increase rH.  the ultrasonic will be placed inside the martha at the bottom along with the cool mist.  they will both be connected to the cycle timer to run concurrently 2min ON and 10min OFF.  (it is ok to run an extension cord off the cycle timer to connect 2 things to it, right?)

how does that sound?

also, vicks humidifiers
currently have a vicks v745a (warm mist).  i dunno if it is ultrasonic or what.  i am assuming it needs to be replaced with a vicks v5100 for my application?

came across an ultrasonic coolmist that could easily be modified to pipe the humidity in.  minimum 1" tubing to pipe out from the ultrasonic?
i think i will set it up like Damion's.  i know his only goes on for 1min and off for 10min, but his martha is sitting on the ground and is probably sealed better than mine.  2min ON and 10min OFF sounds good, at least as a starting point. been tinkering for longer than imagined.  not much time left, soon all will be colonized and ready to be exposed...
