setup - trouble reaching optimal humidity

here's my friend's current setup:

it's a coolmist humidifier attached directly to his terrarium. He has the humidifier on a timer, and he tested it - having it come on low setting for 1 hour, then off for 1 hour. He did this for 8 hours (4 hours on) and his humidity guage only read "53%".
The lid of the terrarrium isn't he best seal, but his logic tells him that if this humidifier can humidify an entire room, then enough moisture should remain in the terrarium to reach at least 80%
He's changed the timer to have the humidifier run for 2 hours and then off for 1 hour. He hasn't tested this yet, but he's simply surprised that it would take that much.
Any suggestions, comments or advice??

it's not calibrated - I didn't know you could - It wasn't cheap, it was around 36 dollars.

Most people run their cool mists 24/7 it is the ultrasonic humidifiers that need to be on a timer.

Myself, I have never seen a cool mist that can handle the job by itself. I hear many people say that they work by themselfs but I've never seen it.
