Why exactly do you think the economy is "stabilized"?

Because the phrase "on the brink of collapse" is no longer a phrase used to describe it. Unemployment is still very high, but we aren't on the edge of a major economic meltdown as we were in the months when the crisis started. We now have at least a vague idea of where the economy will be in the next year or two- slowly and steadily improving. Right after the initial free-fall, no one knew what to expect.

Quote:
Perhaps because the government statistics say that the unemployment is increasing at a slower rate?

Also keep in mind that government statistics don't factor in people who have exceeded their unemployment benefits or individuals who are working part time...

Many people haven't been able to get back into the industries that they are well qualified for and are taking shitty jobs....

I know. Nearly every report on the unemployment rate includes the "real" unemployment rate, including people that are underemployed, etc.

Quote:
Why is he affiliated with Acorn?  Acorn wants to "redistribute wealth".... It kind of sounds like socialism doesn't it?

Well they also want to stop nasty things like predatory lending, and help people find homes. But regardless, they are a pretty messed up organization. But how is he "affiliated" with ACORN?

He represented them in a case supporting the motor-voter law in Illinois? Is every lawyer forever "affiliated" with those who they defend? And is the motor-voter law part of the socialist agenda?

17 years ago he helped register voters for some organization that had some ties to ACORN. Does that mean he is fully affiliated with and supports all of what ACORN believes? What about all the republicans who have also voted to give federal funds to ACORN in the past? Or the executive branch members who were complicit to federal funds being given? Why didn't Bush or the Republican congress defund ACORN years ago? Does that mean they directly support ACORN's pro-prostitution and socialist agenda?

Quote:
One other thing....  Am I to take it that the "war that we should be winning" is a reference to Afghanistan?

If you studied history you would know that Afghanistan is one of the most hostile areas on the planet.  It is not a place you want to camp out in.  The mountainous terrain, underground networks that make the shit from the TET offensive look like a joke, and supremely fucked up weather make it virtually impossible to occupy without eventually precipitating a massive bloodbath.

I think I recall Alexander the Great got the fuck out of there after just 2.5 years and he was one of the greatest generals/tacticians in history....

The U.S.S.R. suffered horrible losses in Afghanistan during the Cold War....

We were arming the muhajadeen against the Rushkies back then.  We then bailed out figuring the Russians and crazy towel heads would mutually fuck each other up.  That did happen to some degree but the muhajadeen survived that shit and decided they didn't like us for bailing out on them...  And here we are....

Afghanistan was going fairly well before we were distracted with the bullshit of Iraq. As our focus shifted, and we started to try and stabilize a weakening Iraq, we lost focus in Afghanistan and it's started to get worse.

When I say "we should" be winning it, I'm implying that our number one goal should be to eliminate the terrorist threat over there.

It's a nasty war, but we aren't the USSR or Alexander the Great.

And what do you propose we do? Sit on our asses and cry while Osama laughs at us and plans another attack? Or do we annihilate our civil liberties to prevent them from attacking us again? You gotta do what you gotta do, and now the terrorists see if you fuck with us, we'll take over your country, take over some other countries that had nothing to do with it, and kill a fuck load of your civilians. It's regrettable, it's dirty, but you have to do what it takes to put them on the defensive.

You think government spending trillions of dollars that they don't have is going to fix anything.

Acorn:

You really don't understand how dangerous Afghanistan is.  It is not a place we can occupy without sustaining heavy casualties.  You do not fight against guerrilla warfare with conventional warfare.  We should know that from Vietnam.

As far as economics is concerned: What makes you think that the mainstream media isn't blowing smoke up your ass again...

his ties to acorn go back more than 17 years and are more than just casual voter registration, Obama was their top trainer, their attorney representing them in cases of 'discrimination' when banks wouldnt give loans to minorities that couldnt afford to repay them as well as the motor votor case

Is the stock market spiraling downward faster than a brick thrown off a roof, evaporating billions in savings, pensions, and retirement funds? Are enormous banks teetering on the brink of collapse, which would have brought financial desolation? Are credit markets still at risk of complete paralysis? I'm not saying all the problems are fixed, but things are starting to turn around. Now that things are beginning to stabilize, reform can begin.

Quote:

Again, does being brought in to speak at an organization (my brief research indicates he spoke at two conferences) mean he is fully supportive of everything they do? He gave the lecture on "power", which probably involved a bunch of vague statements like his speeches about "the power within us all to create change". Does his modest relations to the group indicate he is pro-voter fraud and pro-prostitution rings? Does every lawyer agree with their defendents every time they go to court? The discrimination lawsuit stemmed from the fact that whites with very similar financial situations were getting those loans, while the minorities were not, but it was settled outside of court. Sounds like the banks didn't want the investigation to go any further...

I firmly believe ACORN has done some good and some bad. They aren't a completely socialist nutjob organization. Do they have some fucked up people working for them? Yes. Do some of their beliefs go way outside of the norm? Yes. But to say that they have never done any good ever is a little extreme.

I just don't see where you are going with this. Obama was slightly involved with an organization over a decade ago that turned out to do some bad things. He wasn't related at all with any of the criticized parts of ACORN. Did he veto the bill that de-funded them?

Quote:
show us those bills

Well I'm not entirely sure if funding for ACORN was ever specifically included in bills, or if it was chosen specifically by a department, but my point is still clear-
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=r9Nm9MnufdfjwOCnzsefnJQ

The money has flowed to ACORN for years. The table starts in 94' and ends in 08'. During those years, Republicans controlled the executive branch for about half the time (meaning a Republican administration, so all those allocations by HUD etc. were by REPUBLICANS appointed by REPUBLICANS), and of those years, Republicans controlled BOTH the House and Senate for a VAST majority of that time.

When Republicans controlled BOTH chambers of congress, ACORN was given money 49 times.
While Republicans controlled the executive branch, ACORN was given money 51 times.

Either way you slice it, it proves my point. Whether or not the money was explicitly provided in bills, or allocated by an executive branch official, the Republicans have done their part in helping ACORN along.

They have simply said they don't have any hard evidence. Regardless of that fact, do you believe Al Qaeda had anything to do with 9/11? If you do, you have completely failed to address my point.

Quote:

That's what you call war. But we didn't play defense after 9/11, we played aggressive offense. What have we done since 9/11? Sent Al Qaeda into hibernation and killed hundreds of thousands of their countrymen. What have they done? A couple tiny attacks outside of the US, and spent the rest of their time jerking off in a cave somewhere.

If this is your issue, then what would you have done after 9/11?

What a load of crap.  Stock market stability is based upon fiction, not fact.  Stock market crashes occur when reality bites this fiction in the ass.  Citing the stock market as an indicator of economic stability is kind of like closing your eyes and pretending nothing bad is happening because you can't see it.  Regarding the rest of the questions you ask, nobody knows the answer except for the Federal Reserve, and they aren't talking.

Given the above, you have no way of knowing if things are beginning to stabilize or not.  Lets wait and see how the retail sector does during the Christmas season before making any solid statements regarding the health of the economy.  I suspect, come January, things are going to be pretty ugly.

this is laughable.  you think that because the banks receiving TARP money have injected it into stocks (bubble), causing a rise in prices, this means everything is A-OK?  you do not seem to have even a simple grasp of how the real world works.  in addition, you completely ignore the fact that stock prices can rise simply because of inflation, like any other commodity.  if the dollar tanks by 50%, it takes twice as many $$ to buy the same stock, which sees its price double.  by your logic, that is a recovery.

patriot acts, homeland security, stepped up airport security, requiring
a passport to enter the country (except for the illegals that we wont
deport) the various levels of alert for terrorism risk, etc... america
did exactly as you claim they've done, went on the defensive, bush even
called for 'preemptive strikes' AFTER the attack

did Al Qaeda pull off 9/11, yes... the FBI had someone on custody a few
months prior to the attack who was a member of Al Qaeda, whom had
admitted that there was a plot to hit the world trade center again using
airliners and the FBI didnt investigate

Let's change the direction of the debate. We obviously have differing opinions on the economy. I'm not saying its perfect, I'm not saying we still aren't in a recession. I don't think there's anything that could have been done after the 2008 election that could have everything fixed by now. I know the topic is why Obama is "fucking up the country", but may I ask what you would have done in the past year had you been president?

I find it funny that you insinuate that I'm a child, yet your knowledge seems to be as rudimentary as you believe mine to be. You went on a dumb little rant about ACORN and how it proves Obama is a socialist, yet even the Republicans gave them funds, totaling tens of millions of dollars, 48 times when they had control of the entire congress, and 50 times when they controlled the executive branch. Under your logic, that would make the Republican Party socialist.

i would have embraced capitalism and let the insolvent institutions fail.  this would have been painful in the short term, but would have allowed the restructuring of the foundation of the financial system into a stable form.  things would have been fixed up in a year or less.  the problems that originally caused this mess have not been fixed, and have only been enlarged.

ever hear of the depression on 1921?  probably not, because it only lasted a year.  why, you might ask?  because government didn't get involved.  compare this to what happened just a few years later, and what is happening now.
