Alder and birch are good for Cyans, but pretty much any woodchips will work as long as they are not fragrant like cedars and redwoods.

Look in landscaped areas like schools. Tall grass and scotchbroom or blackberries sometimes. Tall grass and woodchips. Rhodedendron and rose gardens.

Is it worth looking for cyans away from the coast? I'm a little more than an hour's drive inland, in Oregon. Is that too far?

As long as you're on the west side of the state, you should be able to find them.

I would only give a newborn fresh caps. The dried ones will make it sick...

Dried should be fine. Just make sure to blend it in well with the pureed peas or beets or whatever.
