I made a comment on another thread that there are more bacteria in our bodies then our actual cell count. We are host to more alien life then our own. I stated that if we realized the implications of this we could no longer believe our own proclaimed self important specialness.

The idea of who we are, the personality structure is such a narrow band on the spectrum of processes going on in our physical bodies. We are almost completley unaware of this life going on.

It seems obvious and self evident that our personality is nothing special in the sense that it makes us more important than the rest of the life forms on this planet. It's all the same process and we are only a tiny part of that ongoing process. It wasn't created to just for our benefit.

Ya think?

I think it was a terrific debate style. This forum is no longer concerned with just Philosophy with peripheral subjects being dealt with as they arise. As Psychology is in the title of this forum, the motives of the poster in any post are open to be questioned.

"You seem like you want to convince yourself this statement is true." must be also sustained with arguments, not just said like coming from a fortune teller. Psychology, sociology, and philosophy require explanations as precise and logical as possible.
Nice try though...

Hmmmm... "lots of bacteria on humans = humans not special".

So I will ask... What does having more bacteria in/on our bodies than actual cell count implicate? Oh wait there was more, you go on to explain that "We are almost completley unaware of this life going on" and this somehow relates to "who we are" and that somehow relates to the "personality structure is such a narrow band on the spectrum of processes going on in our physical bodies", which I assume you are meaning that you think we are more than our personality. Fair enough, I agree that we are more than an imaginary construct which we call personality. Then you speak of personality which may be special in some sense but is not special in the sense that it possibly could make humans more important than the rest of the life forms on this planet (do you know of life elsewhere?), and saying that that isn't correct... hmmm, well yes. I think I'm following you so far...

Then "It's all the same process and we are only a tiny part of that ongoing process"... Now this is interesting. What exactly is all the same process?

And "It wasn't created to just for our benefit"... Do you believe it was created? And that it was created for the benefit of anything?

Any way I look at it, it seems like a stretch to connect a concept of human specialness (if there is such a thing) or lack thereof, to either a presence or absence of bacteria on the body. Maybe carrying so much bacteria makes humans special cause we support so much "alien life" and without us those tiny little bacteria wouldn't have a home.. or not.

This is a really weak argument.

Therefore Icelander is trying to convince himself.

Um is that so, if it is how do you know this?

What are the implications? That our personality it supported by alien life forms? Seems our personality, is sort of important, so many alien life forms are supporting it.

So the symbiotic nature we share with many other organisms within us makes us not so special. I'll let the quantum physicists know that we are not special after my coffee break.

Another brilliant post. Saying nothing, knowing nothing.

Is your tone condescending here?

I think he did say something that implied deeper thoughts on the nature of reality and that which is conscious and perceiving...

why must you assume here that he knows nothing? Do you want to talk epistemology now?

I agree Icelander.  We assign a value to human life and it is greater than all other life on the planet.  Hell, even a human embryo which is less complex and less developed than a fruit fly is seen as more valuable than any member of any other species.  There is an evolutionary advantage to thinking you are the apex of life, the pinnacle of all biological complexity.  This advantage allows us to consume every available resource with little regret or care for its global consequences.

Your observation that countless bacteria on the microscopic level are living and thriving on us suggests that life is prolific, inventive, persistent, and most of all widely distributed on this planet.  How special are we in comparison?  Value is a human concept so there really is no answer to the question outside of a person's opinion.

It's a shame right?  I think that as time goes on and we push the planet too far there will be some sort of Malthusian cycle where our hubris is no longer advantageous and biology on earth will reset itself and bring all forms of life back into balance.  Hmmm.  We know that species shuffle genes to evolve to their environment.  I wonder if the planet shuffles species around in order to reach its goal (if it has one).

This is not really profound at all.  Many bacteria keep important vital functions working, many have negative effects, and many are neutral and just along for the ride.  We also have more bones than brains, big Whoop(i Goldberg).

My body I will give to pleasures,

any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

I guessn by process I mean evolution/life. Now I'm speaking in street talk here as you can see. I want to reach everyone.

"Created" More street talk just to get at my idea. It's here and that's the point.

My idea with the bacteria is that on a scale of value they may outnumber our idea of humans being the most valuable life on this world. Bacteria just might use most mammals as a vehical. More street talk to get at the idea of all life interconnected and of equal importance/unimportance.

If we see the personality is idea based, how long will we consider it important?
isn't importance just giving ideas to other ideas, all a process of imagination

That would differ from person to person. For me, as time goes on, on an intellectual level at least, I see my personality structure as unimportant outside of allowing me to navagiate day to day reality.

Your sentence implies that there is a you that is not the personality structure, but that it allows the you to navigate, so its a tool that you use

Do we really need it?

Does this body need a peronsal 'me' in order to navigate, or isit possible, that the universe can take care of its own creation?

Im not jumping to assumptions, im just suggesting the possible possibility

What you postulate seems completely unlikely:crazy2: we evolve with the attributes we need for our attempt at survival. A human without a personality structure is not a human any more then a chimp without it's personality is a chimp.

You have a personality structure, so get rid of it and get right back to me.:satansmoking:
