should i use bleach or alcohol to clean surfaces.

hello shroomery!

for my first post i would like to know if i should alcohol to clean the surfaces in the working room or bleach.  i think i read someone saying that bleach does not kill spores?  does alcohol work better do to osmosis with in the cell?

Pick am area that you can call your cultivation room. This is a place that you can clean and have it be dirt free. Don't use a bathroom or kitchen. you need a glove box, sterile gloves, and Lysol. That's it. Always be clean about your work. Contams are the major reason things go wrong.

To be honest, I think all you really need is soap and water to wash away spores from surfaces.  I actually think bleach would be better than alcohol and probably cheaper too.  Alcohol is generally used for medical purposes because it is less toxic to humans but I don't think it is better for killing contams.

There are many good guides in the site if you search them out. If you use a bleach solution, fine. If you use Lysol or Oust fine. Use it all. It will give you peace of mind. Bomb the hell out of the room with a disenfectant.(well before you start your innoc.) Wash all the surfaces down with a 10% bleach solution. Remove dirty clothes and towels. Do EVERYTHING you can within reason to make it a sterile environment. Vaccume the day of. etc. Wash yourself well. close vents that could blow if the heat or a/c kicks on. You will be fine. If you are worried about this it means that you are on the right track and I wish you all the success in the world my friend.
I happen to use a bathroom. A large one. so far, so good.

Lol, five reply's and nobody answered his question.

I think bleach does kill spores but mycelium is fairly resistant to it (10% solution anyways) hopefully someone will confirm this.

Bleach is fine for cleaning.  There is a such thing as trying to be too clean where we end up shooting ourselves in the foot.  Spray everything down with a bleach solution.  Wipe down.  Spray air with lysol and wash your glove box with soap and water.  That should be more than ample to give you the environment you are looking for.

Peroxide will help prevent mold in your humidifiers. Many experienced mycologists also use peroxide to dip cultures before transferring to agar. I prefer not to use it for that purpose except for when transferring dry tissue because of the damage it causes at the cellular level, which the fungi must then recover from.

Alcohol is great for cleaning tools, tabletops and gloves before doing sterile work, but you should still flame sterilize scalpels and needles, etc. A well equipped lab will have a multitude of cleaning agents, as well as at least two fire extinguishers at opposite ends of the working area. I don't know of any particular one cleaning agent that will do it all. I hope this helps.

Read it again.  He said it does kill spores, but doesn't kill the live culture.

In lieu of a glovebox, is there a method to clean the air which does not involve spraying chemicals all over the place?  I'm not comfortable saturating the air with lysol and then expecting myself and my pets to breathe in the long-term consequences of doing so.

As far as I am aware there is no reliable way to clean the air, chemical or otherwise.  Lysol is really only effective for cleaning surfaces.  What you want to do is either control the flow of the air (flowhood) or create a still air environment so that contams will fall harmlessly to the bottom (glovebox).  A glovebox does not need to be anything fancy.  I made one using just a plastic storage tub, a pair of rubber gloves, and a hot glue gun.  It is just a small investment and it will serve you well.

I use alcohol. Any I do almost everything (prepare substrate, innoculization, prepare prints and syringes) in the kitchen. The only contam problem I've had was with a stalled cake I took out and tried to case to save.

No, it won't work.  What you need is a 'laminar' flow hood.  Those air purifiers are okay for controlling odours and such, but they have no use in mycology.
