I see three things here:

1)  Argument By Selective Reading

Making it seem as if the weakest of an opponent's arguments was the best he had. Suppose the opponent gave a strong argument X and also a weaker argument Y. Simply rebut Y and then say the opponent has made a weak case.

This is a relative of Argument By Selective Observation, in that the arguer overlooks arguments that he does not like. It is also related to Straw Man (Fallacy Of Extension), in that the opponent's argument is not being fairly represented.

You cherry-picked a single statement, not addressing how your explanation rebuts the main thrust of my argument.  Nothing that has been run through the explanatory filter and has been caught by the net of intelligent design has ever been from either chance or natural law. 

2)  Argument By Prestigious Jargon

Using big complicated words so that you will seem to be an expert. Why do people use "utilize" when they could utilize "use" ?

For example, crackpots used to claim they had a Unified Field Theory (after Einstein). Then the word Quantum was popular. Lately it seems to be Zero Point Fields.

3)  Argument by Jargon

Jargon means technical and specialized language. When used among experts and among persons of the same field of practice, who are all familiar with the denotations of their specialized terminology, jargon is all right and even helpful for the sake of precision. But when maliciously used for an audience who are not experts or who belong to other fields of practice in order to sound impressive and intimidating, the presence of jargon becomes questionable. When a school physician tells the parents of somebody who is injured in a campus brawl "the patient is suffering from circumorbital hematoma, the prescribed treatment is a regulated application of low-temperature compress, and our prognosis is highly positive given an ample time frame," when he simply means that "the patient got a blackeye, he needs cold compress and his condition would disappear after a few days," is guilty of the fallacy of prestige jargon. The use of jargon can be fallacious in two ways. First, when somebody starts using highly technical words, the immediate connotation would be is that such a person is an expert in his field, and who would dare to argue against an expert. That is intimidation. Second, by using jargon one can easily obscure his own points thereby confusing others and preventing them to counter argue. Next time when you hear somebody saying "such a phenomenal event occurred in accordance to the pre-designed volitions of the supreme and divine being," when he clearly meant "it is God's will," malicious jargon is there.

In order for your counterclaim to be answered, it must be understood.

My description of the UPB is straight forward and readily understandable.  Your counterclaim was so loaded with technical terms it is barely understandable.

Energy Flow in Biology by Harold K. Morowitz.

He's a professor of molecular biophysics at Yale University. He also made an interesting testimony in McLean vs. Arkansas here

Otherwise he published many peer reviewed articles, google scholar is your friend. One should also take the time to read Kauffman and the accessible stuff of Prigogine to understand a bit more in lay terms what biophysics, thermodynamics and non-linear dynamics has to teach us about the origin of life and the organization of biological and ecological systems. The field is young and bubbling and nowhere are we short of possible breakthroughs.

I disagree about selective reading though. My goal was precisely to explain why the idea behind your quote is wrong, not to make a straw man out of it against your construction.

So, again, the UPB does not exhaust the universe's resources. What it exhausts are the resources of a completely dead, bland, unchanging universe. I also want to comment about the explanatory filter which you often refer to. It seems to me that Dembski couldn't quite get his head around what the first step in his own explanatory filter really entails. What it does in particular is to always restrict itself to present day science, natural laws as we understand them now. The explanatory filter thus suffers from the same problems brought about by mythological dogmas: it's a static world view in general and a static view of scientific discoveries in particular. Dembski really wishes it doesn't produce false positives, but wishing and rationalizing is not enough, and such a static view sentences the explanatory filter to produce false positives right away. The first step deals with ever changing ideas, and therefore the explanatory filter should never proceed further when grinding its teeth against the scientific explanation of a natural phenomena or occurrence. Doing otherwise will almost invariably produce a false positive.

So yes, his concept is nice in a static world, which makes it useless at making ID a sound scientific theory, yet even there, the guy has to apply it thoroughly. As I said he seems confident that the explanatory filter never produces false positive, but he sets a precedent himself right at the end, here

Now, the problem with evolution is that it is overly empirical and much too often confused with the problem of the origin of life. While the concepts of evolution may be compelling to some, they are mostly derived from empirical evidences and will only go so far in predictive power. One is then left to the task of trying to imagine various plausible evolutionary pathways, through which the flagellum might have evolved for example, in order to argue against ID, and then make some prediction as to what you should observe in more archaic systems given this or that hypothesis, and then hopelessly wait for such systems to be observe, if ever. This is good science, but this is also hard science and requires lots of luck, resources and an immense capacity for data crunching. One can only make so much leaps in the dark.

The thing is, biology, while a very old and respected science, is still in its infancy regarding conceptual understanding of complex systems. I'll be lynched for saying that, but biology, as a predictive science, is too difficult for biologists. The science of living meat might be too hard for living meat itself after all.

I'm short on time myself and will definitely do the same.  Nice preceding post.  Not to dismiss anyone out of hand, but I haven't had one serious counterclaim since I began discussing this.  At least you seem to understand the argument.  I think your premises are flawed but I'll get into that later.

Ok, I read it thoroughly and I have a question.  Would you rather I reply line by line or is there one section that I should pay attention to?  The line by line thing can get tedious and lead the thread in new directions.  I'm not opposed to that, but I don't want the thrust of either of our arguments or claims to become diluted.

In other words, we have the basis for a good discussion; let's not spoil it.

Simply, lets focus on the topic at hand, patterns vs. design. From there, whatever floats your boat is fine with me. I'm scattered brain, but will try to stay focus too.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "thermodynamical equilibrium."  If you mean that all the little pieces can be in numerous places at various times invalidating Dembski's claim, I got it.  However I do not understand how that invalidates the EF.  Any non-biological artifact or event run through the filter comes out designed, without failure.  Applying the same logic and math to biological artifacts or events should produce the same result.

I'm not sure Dembski's claim is disingenuous or is dogmatic.  Though I can understand why it might be viewed that way.  Several questions would have to be answered before I would arrive at that conclusion.  When you have a new pet theory, everyone and his brother might come out with some sort of answer to invalidate your theory.  Was Kaufmann's hypothesis post EF?  If so, it might be an attempt to cut the EF off at the knees.  Has Kauffman ever admitted his hypothesis stood in the way of the EF?  That is, did he admit an intention to thwart ID?  If so, Dembski is on point.  I'll grant that Dembski's fields (two doctorates, one in mathematics, one in philosophy) are not biology.  Nevertheless, he does have some knowledge of it, and particularly evolution.

I would need to read more about Kaufmann and the relationship of his hypothesis before I would come to that conclusion.  And please feel free not to spend much time on this side argument.  It has little bearing on the main point.

Actually, Kauffman, Morowitz, Prigogine and many other researchers in the field of theoretical biology and biophysics had these ideas way before the ID debate ever arose. For example, Kauffamn's "The Origins of Order" came out in 1993 and actually condense many ideas, experiments and hypothesis he and several others came out with before that time. The book is impressive, and references used therein date back to the 60's up until the 90's.

Morowitz's "Energy flow in biology" came out in 1979, same story. Prigogine's work on dissipative structures got him the Nobel prize in 1977, same story. Same thing concerning Erwin Schrödinger's influential 1944 book "What is life ?".

There are many interesting scientific hypothesis and experimental evidences, maybe less impressive but still important, for explaining the appearance of order, patterns and all that as a necessary/inevitable outcome rather than a designed or random one.

It seems to me that people aren't interested that much in molecular biophysics and thermodynamics arguments compared to the simpler, more accessible "vanilla" evolution from Darwin and friends. I can easily understand that. Also more than a few get confused between the cases for evolution, the origin of life, the false dilemma between chance and design, etcetera, and I can understand that too.

What happen is that the debate doesn't use all evidences, ideas and hypothesis present in the scientific literature, hence its often redundant nature. It is quite often restricted to empirically derived concepts, which in my opinion point toward necessity rather than design, yet do not make a completely strong case, and rightly so since the field is bubbling with new ideas and begs for empirical and conceptual breakthroughs. Unfortunately, because of that, the field and its much needed ideas have yet to be distilled out of technical jargon, and are therefore left out of the debate.

As for the EF, I'll try to break up my argument against it.

In order not to produce false positives:

  • the first filter entails the extraordinary claim that one may exhaust the necessities of all natural laws on top of the claim that all natural laws have been exhausted. Another way of seeing it is that it entails the extraordinary claim that science is done and that we have the actual capacity to dry it out of all its outcomes empirically or using gedankenexperiment. Hence the argument that science must be static for the 1st filter to make sense, which it is not.
  • the second filter, by referring to chance, has recourse to possibilities of natural laws when there are no more necessities (for something to happen by chance, it must at least not violate any known natural laws), and therefore puts one in the hypothetical situation of the exhaustion of all laws. In terms of present day pure sciences, the common denominator and paradigm that glues together and permeates everything is energy, and the only situation in which energy doesn't produce any necessities is the case when it is evenly distributed across all possible states of the universe, when it doesn't flow any-more. This is the case of a universe in thermodynamic equilibrium (synonymous with maximum entropy), a case that doesn't apply at all.


Hence my claim that from the evidences of the world around us, the EF should never get past its first filter, and each time it does so has a virtually unit probability of producing a false positive. One may reply that one produces a true positive when looking at a watch and using the EF to finally claim it is designed, but one must keep in mind that the "designer" of such watch is also part of the necessities of natural laws. Indeed, the designer is inextricably part of the universe in general, and more importantly of the earth in particular, the latter forming an ecosystem through which a incredible amount of solar energy flows, and therefore a system that abounds of necessities , i.e. in thermodynamic equilibrium.

I'd offer to send you some but every time I have given some away it ends up a nightmare.

Now I understand where you are coming from.  I'd call it "finite regress."  It paints everything as some kind of effect from natural causes.  In effect, as far as I can see, begging the question.  It's clever and unique, but ultimately solves nothing.  And as a rebuttal to intelligent design dependent on criteria that have yet to be proved.

What do you think of Kenyon?  Not the poisoning the well nonsense attempting to paint him as a Creationist nut, but the fact that he abandoned his position on OoF.  Kenyon  coauthored Biochemical Predestination with Gary Steinman.  Biochemical predestination seems strikingly like the tact you're taking.

I did not read Biochemical Predestination but from what I got (google and all that), it is one of the first textbook advocating necessity and it came out in 1969.

Reading the few counter arguments I could find, supposedly related to Kenyon's "conversion", they seem to suffer from the same misinterpretation of probabilities (e.g. roll a dice a thousand time and the probability for obtaining the actual sequence of number you obtain is vanishingly small, yet it is the precise sequence you obtained after all) by assessing necessities with respect to a posteriori probability distributions rather than a priori and therefore, unknowingly at best, commit themselves to unrealistic probability counting.

Said another way, it unwittingly posits oneself to a situation where the probability distribution is maximally uncertain in the past rather than the future. It is thus equivalent to assuming the past situation of early Earth and universe to be in thermodynamic equilibrium situation (maximum uncertainty/entropy) in the past and then trying the assess the probability of life arising from such situation. It therefore seems to me that the book isn't well grounded in far from equilibrium thermodynamic.

We only have one data point for life: the one we know of, hence the very risky business of making sense or nonsense of it using probabilities. Such is our plight.

Anyway, all this is only as good as the information I could find on the internet. They hold a copy of Biochemical Predestination at the the chemistry and biology department library, I'll try and have a look at it during my next coffee break.

The a posteriori reasoning is the sharpshooter fallacy.  If Kenyon was relying on that, he'd be incorrect.  Thankfully, the EF doesn't work that way.  This business of the past not being like the present cuts both ways.  Radio carbon dating, radioactive dating uranium and a host of other things are suspect if we do not conclude stasis.  Such are the arguments of Creationists.  I don't think they stand up very well within methodological naturalism.

So I had a look at it yesterday. The condensed conclusion of the book would simply be that the chemical reactions that gave rise to life and that sustain them do not violate any chemical law.

It moreover suggests that many reactions we observe in living systems and that could have been going on in a prebiotic world are slightly more probable than others. Pretty weak claim if you ask me; of course, of two reactions the one with slightly more entropy of production will end up slightly more dominant.

What it doesn't do though is address the point, crucial I think, of the organizing power of energy flows, hence missing the idea of necessity.

Why couldn't plants just have a light sensative protein complex that produces ATP?  Glycolysis and the calvin cycle could be similarly rearranged to be much simpler and use less.


I mean, the natural process works, but to call it elegant in simplicity seems a bit much to me.


qubit, what is this efficient solar cell that can rival photosynthesis?  I wasn't aware anything was even close on an energy in/energy out scale.  I would guess you could perhaps use more of the light actually present in an area, don't know how well plants do in that regard, but I thought plants where very efficient on pretty much every scale, especially given the percent of energy outputted vs taken in.




Do you want to propose a mechanism for having one of these 'light sensitive protein complex' that is part of a self-replecating, adaptable organism ingetrating its energy use and production to specific levels across billillions of biological processes in the organism?

Photosynthesis is elegant because it can adapt to different light conditions, because it is sufficiently complicated that mutations in the genes that control for aspects of the organism can affect the organism so slightly that beneficial mutations can start to emerge from the chaos.

I think it is severly close minded to consider a solar cell as better than photosynthesis.

solar cells do NOT function self-sustainedly within a system that reproduces itsel and maintains itself and adapts to changing environments. Solar cells do not exist holographically within every part of a multifaceted complex organism.

Every solar cell we know has been created by a person or a machine made by a person.

every specimin of photosynthetic organism, on the other hand, utilises technology that has sustained millions / billions / 6,000 years.

Whether it was designed or not, it is absolutely beautiful.

You see the solar cell as more elegant because it seems to do its function more efficiently and simply. But that is to reduce photosynthetis to 'harnessing of light energy'.

That is not what photosynthesis is.. photosynthesis is a lot more. It not only harnesses light energy but does so using biochemical units that can be coded into a standardised DNA/RNA system, harnessing the energy into chemical potentials that are sustained in a specific balance by hundreds of different factors all interacting simultaneously. This occurs seperately in each cell and can be activated differentially across seasons or if conditions change. The functionality of this system is wound in with the functionality of thousands of other systems within the human body.

Solar cells on the other hand can produce a gross electrical potential. This is obviously more efficient for our HUMAN uses in technology because we want to harness enough energy to use our appliances, as well as do so with materials that we can find and use and understand ourselves. But as of yet I have not seen any solar cell technology that can exist in nature and withstand the forces of generations and ages gone past.

As for your comment 'light sensitive protein that produces ATP', what do you think happens in Chloroplasts?

Light sensitive proteins focus energy into a process that leads to ATP being available.

Proteins do not 'produce' chemicals... they interact with the chemicals around them. EAch stage of the interaction needs to be moderated to ensure that the process occurs smoothly. Thus it is beneficial for there to be a few stages involved in the process that leads to ATP being available, because this way there are more potential, subtle ways that the plant can adapt. Although the process is less efficient in quantitative terms of energy conversion, it is far more elegant than any man-made technology because it exists in such a complex, inter-related ecosystem and has managed to exist along side so many different factors in the world.

Solar technology is only good in the small, specific, humane world of controlled systems and isolated functionalities.

Hey, solar technology is fuckin amazing too.. but its not quite as beautiful nor elegant as photosynthesis, in my opinion. I hope that my extrapolations in this post can help convert at least one of you

I can't help but notice that no one addressed the two examples I gave in the OP. Many tens of thousands thought the two artefacts mentioned to be designed, but when examined closely, turned out to be natural in origin.

What do you want someone to say?  Lots of people interpret pieces of toast to have religious icons in them as well.  Does that mean we cannot interpret design?  No, it doesn't.

Let me ask you one: are crop circles designed by an intelligent agent or merely the result of natural forces like the wind?

I've not seen any argument explaining how the explanatory filter, which you seem to say might as well define ID, would dispose of the examples you or he raises with any reasoning.


In fact, I've never seen the explantory filter used- its all just vague claims.


Its like saying you've got a scientific way to test god:  "get evidence of god , if the evidence leads to the conclusion that god exists then god exists".  It may well be true but it doesn't cover how you actually go about finding such evidence.  Likewise with the chance of something being natural ans so forth to the extent I've seen here.

Bullets are answers and if he cannot provide contrary reasoning, i.e. give evidence that natural forces create crop circles he loses the argument.

It boils down to reading and understanding.  Why anyone would ask so many questions after reading ID material is beyond me.
