Compasssion is an emotion?  I guess that's one way of defining it.  I see three sources that define it differently:

Merriam-Webster, sympathetic consciousness of others' distress together with a desire to alleviate it.

Free Online Dictionary, Deep awareness of the suffering of another coupled with the wish to relieve it.

Princeton Wordnet, a deep awareness of and sympathy for another's suffering.

I see Wiki defines it as an emotion, but I don't consider an open-source encyclopedia authoritative.  :shrug:

I believe that compassion stems from our own pain and the desire that the Universe care about us personally. When we see another suffering we can relate it directly to our own and our need to be cared for. It may be directly related to our death anxiety.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately.  I find that I am both misanthropic and compassionate.  Honestly, though, I think the misanthropy is more human.  Real compassion is extremely difficult to generate.  It's almost like you have to destroy a part of yourself in order for it to come out.  (Not necessarily a bad thing.)  That said, compassion for others is the only thing that relieves my own suffering... almost as if it's a survival mechanism.  Another huge relief is the ecstatic experience brought on by enjoyment of music, art, etc.  I guess whatever takes you outside of yourself can make you happy and this is, in effect, what compassion does.  You take attention away from your own problems, your own internal dialogue, by focusing on the suffering of others.  But what person can truly focus on the suffering of others, the vast reality of worldwide pain, without having a nervous breakdown?  Someone who has, to some extent, squelched out all of their own emotions, i.e. their own humanity.

I was thinking on this when I made my post but did not include it as I really wasn't clear on my thoughts on the subject.

I remember hearing recently about a dog that was hit and lay wounded in the middle of a busy freeway. Another dog who was a stranger to this one  risked the deadly freeway crossed and actually dragged that unfortunate dog off the freeway. I can't get this action out of my mind and it makes me wonder to no end what the true motives were for this action.

Compassion is self-serving, just as everything else is.  I see compassion as more of a contagious emotion.  Compassion is virtuous, and connects life through unconditional love.  Giving = receiving, so compassion can be seen as selfish and virtuous at the same time.
