super sensitive social encounters
    #9943179 -

So I was in a meeting with a faculty woman at my school today and I realized I have some sort of issue with talking with certain people.  Instead of really listening and analyzing what they say, I find myself enthralled by the way their faces animate, and the fact that they are directing their voice and focus totally on me.  it seems surreal and I'm usually at a loss with following the conversation coherently.

I find this usually only happens with people that I percieve as some sort of authority, or someone I feel I have to perform for socially.

Also related is when I'm speaking in the same sort of performance context, instead of clearly voicing my ideas, I start to hear the sound of my own voice and become somewhat detached until I can catch myself again.

i would not be concerned with this except for that I will possibly doing many interviews soon for jobs and would really like to be able to relax and say what I want to say and not be caught up with how strange speaking to strangers in an interview is.

This only happens to me when I think people don't believe me as I'm explaining things to them, but I don't blame them because I talk about things like how there are cures for cancer that are held back by our corrupt FDA. Look up cancertutor.org. My exgirlfriend lived through ovarian cancer that took over her right lung without chemo, surgery or radiation. It took alot of toying around though.

haha.. well good advice i guess.  i don't know how i'd feel if someone reacted to me that way, but I don't think it's an issue of respect because I'm not really doing it on purpose, it's very overwhelming.  And I've never done this in a down to earh conversation when someone was being real with me, it's only in professional/business encounters where I feel like it's some sort of performance.

and yes I do sound weird dont i?  good job.

That has only happened to me on acid. Sounds like too much self consciousness. Try thinking about other things. Concentrate on what they are saying. Another approach would be to have someone role play with you. Play the part of the boss, teacher, or whoever gives you these feelings. Have them say things they would say and you respond as you would. It may sound silly but it could do the job for you. It's a form of desensitization.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)
