Ive been waiting to post a long time and this will be my first. I dont know if anyone else has tried this or not but I thought Id help out the popcorn users. I myself use rye now.
If you want a faster germination or "quick start" for your popcorn grow, add a 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch thin layer of cooked rice on top of the corn.
Dont use uncooked rice though.
The trick is to cook the rice just enough to where it is dry on the outside after straining, holding only about 1/2 to 3/4 of its full water holding capacity.
Use brown rice, the "Adolphus" brand from walmart for about one dollar works on about 30 to 50 jars. It's less sticky than white rice. I've never used instant rice. I just throw in about one cup of rice and one and 1/4 cup of water. this does about 10 jars or more. I forget.
Basically, if you were to put the rice in your mouth, youd say "this needs five or ten more minutes." And itd be pretty chewy. 
Now add this thin layer of rice on top of the corn. I usually fill the corn to the normal level. The rice falls between the corn after you shake it later on.
PC. it for 60 minutes at least. Let it cool and knock her up!
Shake your new jars after injection. The rice should fill the spaces between the corn. It should more or less distribute itself evenly throughout the jars. It wont smear unless you cooked the rice too long. Even if the rice does smear it usually wont contaminate. Ive done this for months.
Put the jars in your incubator.
in three days or less youll notice your friends have germinated on the mixed substrate. Youll have the shakeability of corn and the fast germination of rice. Shake it at 25% colonization to make it happen faster. Sorry about having no pics.

that sounds like a pretty good idea.. im cooking popcorn for the first time right now actualy.. perhaps ill try it in the near future : )

Not everyoneuses LC's, It's just another step where contams can be introduced, but if you have a clean LC, you're right, it wouldn't matter, this was intended for MS inoculation.

What's up with the faster germination?
I thought it always took about 5 days to germinate spores.

germination can take up to 14 days with popcorn, but with added rice it takes off in two to three days visibly

Thats not right. Spores can germinate in as little as an hour maybe less. It just takes several days before theres enough mass of cells that you can see.
You shouldnt be shaking after inoculation, that might be why its taking so long to see anything. You want your spores close together, so that they meet up, and join to form dykarotic mycelium. Then you shake to spread the myc throughout your jar.\
I could be wrong, but i think monokyrotic mycelium can only grow so far without mating.

Try it and then report back, but can someone tell me why this tek even works? It seems to me that adding more substrate would slow down the mycelium growth and that the reason why popcorn usually colonizes so fast is because there is very little to actually colonize because the grains are so large.

That's wrong actually, you can colonize entire grain jars with monokaryotic mycelium.
