No problem Mickel. Just keep in mind that drugs are fun, but that's all they are - they are NEVER the answer.

Nice reply to the kids problem rustik
You dont need a recreational drug to magically cure you, do yourself a favor and go see a therapist. In a situation like this the potential to become addicted is higher. In the end it's your path to walk down, goodluck with it

Using drugs is completely the wrong approach.
Last december I got struck with Imminent Death Anxiety Syndrome: I got a heart infarction and ended up on the ICU ward. Several nights i came close to death & this resulted in severe anxiety bordering on panic whenever I got chestpain (Angina Pectoris). This aggrevated the heart symtoms. The docs gave me (no) shit so I decided I'd either accept a Benzo addiction by whipping out the Xanax stash or risk death by anxiety-aggrevated Angina Pectoris. I chose the former.
Oh joy! little anxieties and when they struck just munch down on a 0.25mg tab and hold it under the tongue for some minutes as seen on bad trips. Well, fun months, but withdrawal was HELL!! A mere 3 x 0.25mg of Alprazolam/Xanax for two months and withdrawal was complete and utter Hell. The thrice-daily AP was gone but whenever it returned, anxiety flared up again. I had learned NOTHING.
Take this from me: COGNITIVE BEHAVIOR(AL) THERAPY. It's hard, real hard work but there's 75% chance to overcome or drastically reduce Social Anxiety Disorder within six months or so. And no drugs at all. Drugs are bandaids, CBT is a cure! Do a websearch on it & seek therapist assistance. Group CBT usually is best. When it comes to SAD, drugs really are poor substitutes for Cognitive Therapy.

Dont risk a benzo addiction, or use other drugs... I wish I had never started taking xanax, although it still helps me I will never know if I am combating rebound anxiety, the panic attacks, or GAD. I probably have twice the anxiety I had before, although it dissapears when I take a little pill. Waking up to withdrawl symptoms aint fun, and when you run out of pills you can bet it will be 200% worse than it has ever been. Although I have done the work of combating the fear and panic naturally, the addiction keeps it with me. Now that I have beat anxiety in my mind, I must beat it in my body by weening myself off the pills. This is not a fun or easy thing to do my friend.
Good luck, and for the love of god, dont become addicted to Xanax, you will regret it. You could try other drugs, but I would highly recommend that you keep away from the Xanax unless absolutly necessary (extreme feelings of panic in my case).
Social anxiety is something I would never suggest Xanax for. But then again I am no doctor, just someone who is living on the dark side of addiction.

Why do you want to use chemicals to suppress your internal issues? If you get your mind worked out on your own you won't have to worry about taking lame drugs that only shield the problem - you want to take pills your whole life?

That is most of your problem right there. You want it to be gone, but you dont realize you must work to get anywhere. First turn around your attitude, and definetly dont try to hide from your problem with pills. To me your the exact same type of person that would end up in my situation.
In a way I know how you feel. I hated my anxiety so bad I would have taken anything or done anything I could to make it stop. It was hell, I couldnt smoke weed without almost instantaneous panic attacks, and I was an avid smoker back then. Then it started getting worse, even when I wouldnt smoke, it could hit me anywhere and any time. I went to the hospital several times not knowing what was wrong with me. When I got that first injection of Ativan it was great. Nothing mattered to me, and my panic was intantly gone. I was placed on many antidepressants with no luck. Tried Paxil, didnt work, then had horrible withdrawl symptoms that felt like miniature siezures, had to deal with them cold turkey. Then eventually I got the little orange (then blue) oval pills I am now phisically addicted to and my situation is far more worse off than it should have been. Now I am trying with all my might after 3 years of high doses to gradually taper my dosages down while at the same time trying to combat anxiety on my own. Its so hard when I feel the negative feelings coming on to keep myself from taking another piece. But I do it, and day by day im getting a little closer. Not only am I making progress with my addiction, I have also knocked the panic attacks out of my life. All I am left with now is rebound anxiety and withdrawl symptoms as I cope to normal dose levels. Eventually I will be rid of these evil things if things keep going as they have been but it is still a bit of a journey. I see it as a long road, but I am determined to reach its end, there can be no other way. I have seen the dark side of too many prescription pills, and I will try with everything I have to never end up in that place again.
Basically my point is you have to conquer this on your own as many others have said. It takes practice, you must endure pain and suffering. I would definetly try to get professional help if you dont think you can beat it alone, but that is the wrong attitude. You must keep a positive head, all I hear is you complaining. How about focusing on a good time when you had no social problems at all, remember how easy it was to carry on a conversation. Sometimes all it takes is a little motivation, and I believe you have it, but dont know how to use it. Gotta get it in gear bud.
Your not gonna get well just sitting there dwelling on everything that sucks about your situation.

Hey Mickel,
I think that you should listen to ATWAR's advice. A lot of anti-anxiety and anti-depressants have nasty side-effects and withdrawal. Have a look at a few internet sites dealing with the medical effects of stuff like Zoloft, Xanax, Valium, Prozac and the like. Weigh up the benefits/disadvantages and decide whether this is the course you wish to take. However, ANWAR is right - the first step is acknowledging that you have an anxiety problem that is not going to be resolved by drugs; or another pharmaceutical drug probably, in isolation.
There is no easy solution to psychological issues (you have to excuse my psychobabble - I'm a psych major). Confront your anxieties. Whoever mentioned CBT was also on the right track. A little research will show you that CBT generally has better outcomes clinically speaking than other methods for the general public (admitadly better in combination with pharmies!). This might be the course for you if you think you are unable to deal with these anxieties issues by yourself.
Don't get me wrong - I'm a fan (advocate?) of drugs. But using them recreationally in your situation I don't think will give you any great insights into your problem. Yes - E and certain others can break down your social anxiety temporarily and people have talked about having breakthroughs in problems with it -> but this was usually in a controlled setting with psychologists etc. See Swiss studies(?) for examples on the internet. I've found that when I had problems with depression, taking a shit load of drugs displaced the pain/problem, but it all came back hard core after 2 years when I got off everything, and I had forgotten basic social skills and how to interact with people 'normally' and so on. So yeh - it can compound your problem.
Anyway, sorry for the long rant. Best of luck with everything. PS There is some good advice on these boards - many people have and do currently experience the same problems. We're all human right.

I would first say to see a psych. and ask him/her about Paxil. Paxil is perscribed for social anxiety.

I'm so glad there is people saying this here. I mean if you can get better without using drugs you'll be FAR better off.
I think too many people jump to prescription drugs as a cure for everything.
I still believe we are over medicating our youth today for anxiety, depression, etc.. I think maybe 1-5 people on prescription drugs under 18 truly need the drugs. I think shrinks are to quick to medicate and the youth today too quick to use drugs as an answer.
Glad to see some really smart responses here, gives me faith in the drug community that not everyone preaches drugs as a cure all.
