I really can't follow what you're saying.

You're proud of your country, but since pride is just a word, there are aspects of your country you're not proud of.

That's honestly the line of thinking I'm getting from you.

I had lots of people from my school go there and return no better than when they started ,actually they were 4 years behind when they got out, with no real exsperiance in any field.
I had to deal with the grads on the jobsite before, they knew the technical just fine, but lacked any real world skills. They were very meek and uncordinated,I actually had to send them away because of safety concerns.Very dissappointing........
I finished about half of the 9th grade and have done better than most of my friends and alot of the college students that came along.I own a house in cali and have no problem getting a job from companies that are not even hiring.

Am I a little jaded ,possibly, but I would say about 10 percent of college students actually use that degree in way that makes it worth while.

Lots of college students that work right along side of people that never went to college and never surpass these non college people ever.

I think alot of parents send thier kids there in hopes they will pull it together, kind of a last hope effort that johhny will do more than flip burgers for life and it just does not work that way.
Now the kid that had a perfect grade average in highschool deserves to go and will probably use his skills well, but that is the minority.
I also know people about my age that are still trying to get that school paid for, because thier time at school brought them no return.
This jadedness does not even take into consideration ,the drugs and parties, cheaters or those who pay to stay ,just to be in college or those who come from money ,that are making a career of staying in college 10 to 20 years to get out and do nothing.
This has mostly to do with the individual, not the school, the school is just where this goes down at.Soo I guess its not the school ,but the individual I dislike ,but that institution that makes it possible also bears some of the blame........

no dood.  I guess saying "pride is just a word" was a useless statement and i guess thats it could confuse.  What I was trying to convey was that pride is a word that i feel is used a little too loosely.  What are we really proud of?  Is it really something to be proud of?
I wasn't trying to put anyones ideas down.  Someone said that pride is what made this country great and I thought; Pride in what?  How did that make us great?  Is there REALLY anything to be proud of?  If so WHAT?

nono.  Once you use this word over and over for things you either don't understand or don't actually have it loses it's meaning.

If someone keeps saying 'I'm proud of x, I'm proud of y' that doesn't make it lose personal meaning.

I do half see your point though. You can't go up to one of those 'patriots' and be like 'I'm proud of this' cause to them it holds no meaning, so even though to you it means something, it's pointless to share with certain people.

However, I say fuck those people, right?

Yeah ,its called pride in what you do,if you take pride in what you do,like we used to,it results in a great thing.
I take pride in what I do and it results in a better product and it shows ,I am constantly told ,you have pride in what you do and it shows .
Pride in personal gains, you know, the things that bring true happiness ,not monetary gain.
Paint a board with a half assed attitude ,like this is just a board ,paint that same board with pride and see how good it looks,no runs ,no missed areas and lasts 3 times as long as the half assed no pride attempt.
So yes there are things to have pride in,personal pride, pride in your work ,no matter what it is.

Here is a example ,this is the first engine I ever built ,had never done it before ,but I took pride in it and it came out excellent and above par ,the first time.

Here is the video of it turning over for the first time, like it had been running for years.

Here is the next video of it reving up after break in.

Anybody can do something ,but not everyone can do it with pride.

bringing combat experiences, future deployments, military politics, graphic and senseless violence.. into a setting of something completely unrelated, such as a lecture about.. say philosophy.  Not only doing so from a self appointed authority perspective, but being combative to those who disagree, and outright childish.

Now, consider that this is on a daily basis.

I appreciate that you dont do the same

what made you join the military, and are you currently active? if so, how do you feel about it?

A lot of things made me join. An appeal to patriotism after 9/11, a long family history of military service, a sense of adventure, and a long bout of misanthropy.

I got out last month after 5 years.

I talk about it if people ask. If I was back at school I'd probably keep my mouth shut unless I thought my life experience was relevant.

I think that's the problem though. You might not appreciate the fact that after 8 years of warfare, the majority of a college aged service member's life experience is war. Not smoking a bong in their parent's basement through their 20's, but being at war.

All of the context and associations are vastly different.

I agree.  but.. different life experiences, in my mind, don't excuse inappropriate social behavior.  i personally find it annoying.. but thats about it.

Key words being 'personally' and 'appropriate social behavior'. Who determines the ladder? Surely it's not based on personal opinion of a single observer.

I think they ultimately feel proud because no matter how fucked up of a drug induced bubble you live in, there are evil and crazy fucking people out there who lack morals yet they retain power.  When personal greed or emotion (or lack of)cause things like genocide, they don't just go away.  Other people with morals and a sense of responsibility take action putting themselves in mortal danger to protect others.

Just like anything else, there are hippies in the military too.  Even though half the shit I do is illegal, I'd fight to the death to live like this.  Fuck being in China.

and... There are some true warriors in the military, and the shit they go through in life is a nightmare at best, to most.

It is this type of thinking that makes me hope for another draft. Grandparents would be bitch slapping the taste out of your mouth for even talking this nonsense. How many of them LIED just to get in, to follow their fathers footsteps. I say thank you to every veteran I see, young and old. Im not patriotic myself, but if ANY random person deserves my respect, its one who shut up and put up, and put their life on the line to rid the world of those that think freedom is evil.

"Nothing in life is so exhilarating as to be shot at without result."
-Winston Churchill

"War is delightful to those who have not yet experienced it."
-Erasmus

"All that is necessary for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing."
-Edmund Burke

"Freedom is not free, but the U.S. Marine Corps will pay most of your share."
-Ned Dolan

"There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and the
enemy. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion."
-General William Thornson

"Some people live an entire lifetime and wonder if they have ever made a
difference in the world, but the Marines don't have that problem."
