And also, not only would it be taxed...but there would be many costs that decriminalizing would eliminate. For example, keeping just ONE person in jail for a year because of marijuana costs an average of more than 25,000 dollars. Not to mention the hours we pay police men, judges, and lawyers for to work on marijuana related cases. As far as money goes, there will be nothing but profit. It can be mass produced cheaply and taxed heavily. Crime rates will almost certainly be reduced. It's all win win.

The problem however, is that as you said, Obama has yet to gain the support of many people. His stimulus package has been highly criticized and decriminalizing is a HUGE step that the country isn't necessarily ready to make.

Yes, but marijuana has been made illegal by the federal government. Federal government is above state government, which means that the decision does not depend entirely upon the governer of california.

I don't think they'd do that. There's a law that says that any charges against you will not be dropped if a law suddenly changes. It was a crime at the time, so you still get the punishment for it.

Shure it does ....medical marijuana is still illegal ,just  a state law here in Cali. The feds still bust us,but we dont care.
If they pass this one also ,it will be the same story.

My Mom is a real straight edge person. She hardly ever drinks, and she gives me that disappointed head shake when I discuss drinking (even though i barely drink). I doubt she has ever taken drugs. When she was a college student in the late 60s, she was one of the few who didnt get fucked up all the time. I have never mentioned that I smoke weed to her. She is a democrat, and also works for the state department, and used to work for the department of justice.

I was staying with her and today we were watching the marijuana documentary on the discovery channel (because it was on before the dog whisperer :lol:) and out of the blue she said,

"I don't see why they don't just legalize it and tax it already"

My jaw dropped to the floor. When non-stoners support it, it is good news :smile:. I'm sure there are plenty of other people out there who are starting to wake up, and are fed up with what the war on drugs has become. The next generation of politicians are likely to be much more progressive.

I think it's just getting to the point where it makes sense to anyone with half a brain.  It's blatantly obvious that all the efforts to fight/discourage cannabis smoking simply don't work. It's not stopping anyone.

And meanwhile it's a huge drain on public resources in so many ways.  Legalizing and taxing would not only prevent all the ridiculous expenses of fighting cannabis use, but it would provide a good gov't revenue source as well.

Plus I think that ending the double-mouthed hypocrisy of the current paradigm is worthwhile in itself (of course this means that heroin should be in the same legality and availability category as alcohol, but there's no way in hell that's gonna happen)

Mine is the EXACT same way.
The other day the whole Michael Phelps thing came on the news again and they were like "Michael Phelps was caught smoking a marijuana pipe..."

And my mom goes "Why do they keep calling it that. It's a BONG for god sakes. Marijuana pipe. Jesus. Leave the man alone."

I almost died.

DEA will still come in and raid all over California if the law passes, but state and local cops can't do anything about it.

Most of you need to realize, this is beyond most of us. I know, it's hard to believe, but money runs things. You all are looking at this as a drug, or grandma, or voter issue even, this is a MONEY issue.
